According to his website:

”When I met with Imagine Dragons for the first time, they invited me into their studio to hear songs from Smoke + Mirrors while still in the works. What an incredible experience it was to visit them in their world. I felt so honored. I will never forget the moment I heard ‘The Fall.’ It is absolutely beautiful! A floating tree with thousands of gold petals rising to the sky came flooding in. In my mind, without doubt or question, this painting completely captured the spirit and emotion of the song and became the perfect means of expression to tell the story of ‘The Fall’."

When Illinois Entertainment asked Dan Reynolds to discuss “The Fall,” Dan drew in a breath, but “no words came out.” After a few silent minutes, Dan confesses that it is a love song for his wife, Aja Volkman. He continues:

"But it’s more than that, more than that for me. The chorus of it says ‘Do you know you’re all I know?,’ which is a really simple phrase. But there’s so much power in that phrase because I feel like, at the end of the day, I started everything over in my life, my spirituality, everything. So I just wiped it clean. So the first thing that comes to mind when it’s all clean and there’s nothing there is, I know that I love my wife, and I know that she’s my best friend, and I know that I love my little girl."
