Lately
Imany Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Many nights before
You′ve showed up on my door
But I didn't answer
I thought I knew better

I′m sorry
Lately, I haven't been myself
Oh, I am sorry
Lately, I haven't been myself

You say you wanted more
But that′s all I have left
I′ve seen you once before
But with somebody else

I'm sorry
Lately, I haven′t been myself
Oh, I am sorry
Lately, I haven't been myself

But at times I lose my mind
I wish you knew what I′m about
Give it one last try
I promise you, I ain't so bad

But at times I lose my mind
I wish you knew what I′m about
Give it one last try
I promise you, I ain't so bad

Oh, I'm sorry
Lately, I haven′t been myself
Oh, I am sorry
Lately, I haven′t been myself

I'm sorry, yes, I′m sorry

Oh, I'm sorry, I′m so sorry
I am

Overall Meaning

The first verse starts by describing someone who has been showing up at the singer's door at night, but they didn't answer, thinking they knew better. This could be interpreted in different ways - perhaps the person at the door was someone they used to have a relationship with, or someone they were interested in but chose to avoid. The first line of the chorus, "lately, I haven't been myself", suggests that something has been going on internally for the singer recently that has caused them to not act as they usually would. They apologize for this, almost as if they have disappointed someone else by not being true to themselves.

The second verse suggests that the person at the door might have wanted more than just a casual meet-up, but the singer couldn't give them what they were looking for because they didn't have anything left to give. "I've seen you once before, but with somebody else" could mean that the person the singer is apologizing to was interested in them while they were already in a relationship with someone else, causing the singer to feel guilty. The repeated lines in the chorus, "lately, I haven't been myself", emphasize the internal struggle the singer is going through and how it is affecting their actions towards others.

The bridge of the song is a plea to be understood - the singer wishes that the person they are apologizing to knew them better and could give them another chance. The repetition of "I wish you knew what I'm about" shows that the singer may feel misunderstood or underestimated. The promise of "I ain't so bad" suggests that the singer is trying to gain validation from the person they are singing to, and that they feel like they are not being given a fair chance.
