Abandonment
In The Midst Of Lions Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They know the truth because creation points to it and its glory makes it obvious to them, singing, "I'm shining through these invisible qualities and I loved you, but you wouldn't worship me." And every excuse will be nothing. That malice, greed, envy. Claiming to be wise, they betrayed truth for a lie. So give them over to that "wisdom", their hate. I'll withdraw my hand and give them everything they want: abandonment. Corruption and consequence. And you can drown yourself in that emptiness. I'll be patiently waiting for you to call on my name while you try to find your own way home.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Abandonment" speak to a larger theme of the consequences of choosing to reject the truth and wisdom of a higher power. The first verse speaks of the obviousness of creation pointing to a greater power, yet despite this, some still choose not to worship or acknowledge it. The lyrics suggest that these individuals will be given over to their own hate and wisdom, ultimately being abandoned by the higher power. The imagery of corruption and consequence is used to suggest the darkness that comes with this abandonment, as well as the emptiness that comes from drowning oneself in it.

The second half of the lyrics shift from a message of abandon to a message of waiting. Despite this abandonment, the higher power will be patiently waiting for these individuals to call on his name, suggesting a readiness to forgive and welcome them back. The overall message is one of warning, but also of hope and redemption.
