Nice To Know You
Incubus Lyrics

Better than watching Geller bending silver spoons
Better than witnessing new-born nebulas in bloom
She who sees from up high smiles and surely sings
Perspective pries your once-weighty eyes and it gives you wings

I haven't felt the way I feel today
In so long, it's hard for me to specify
I'm beginning to notice
How much this feels like a waking limb
Pins and needles, nice to know you

Goodbye, nice to know you
Goodbye, nice to know you
Goodbye, nice to know you
Goodbye, nice to know you
To know you

Deeper than the deepest Cousteau would ever go
And higher than the heights of what we often think we know
Blessed she who clearly sees the wood for the trees
To obtain a bird's eye is to turn a blizzard into a breeze

I haven't felt the way I feel today
In so long, it's hard for me to specify
I'm beginning to notice
How much this feels like a waking limb
Pins and needles, nice to know you

Goodbye, nice to know you
Goodbye, nice to know you
Goodbye, nice to know you
Goodbye, nice to know you
To know you

But could it be that it has been there all along?
Yeah

I haven't felt the way I feel today
In so long, it's hard for me to specify
I'm beginning to notice
How much this feels like a waking limb
Pins and needles, nice to know you

Goodbye, nice to know you
Goodbye, nice to know you
Goodbye, nice to know you

Goodbye, nice to know you
To know you

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of "Nice To Know You" allude to the controversial television performer, Uri Geller, who claimed to possess psychokinetic abilities including the power to bend silver spoons. Incubus lead singer, Brandon Boyd, seems to imply that there are greater things to experience than watching Geller perform spoon-bending and encourages listeners to broaden their perspective. The next line references celestial events, suggesting that witnessing the birth of nebulas (stellar nurseries) is more wondrous than Geller's tricks.

Boyd then introduces the character "she who sees from up high" who is blessed with a broad and elevated perspective, causing her to smile and sing. He suggests that perspective can be liberating and gives one the ability to fly or soar beyond once-self-imposed limitations. The chorus with its repetition of "nice to know you" becomes somewhat paradoxical as it appears he is bidding farewell. Nonetheless, the lyrics clearly allude to a deeper transformation taking place within the singer, almost as if he is bidding farewell to an old self that is no longer needed.

The second verse continues the theme of broadening one's perspective. Cousteau is a reference to French oceanographer, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, who made marine conservation efforts famous. Boyd suggests that "she who sees from up high" can dive deeper than Cousteau ever could, and her vision extends higher than what we think we already know. She who can see the forest beyond the trees, turns tumultuous winds into soothing breezes. The repeated chorus becomes almost haunting as it possibly depicts the death of his "old self" and the rebirth of something new.

Better than watching Gellar bending silver spoons.
Better than witnessing new born nebulaes in bloom.
She who sees from 'up-high' smiles and surely sings.
Perspective pries your once weighty eyes and it gives you wings.

I haven't felt the way I feel today
in so long it's hard for me to specify.
I'm beginning to notice how much this feels like a waking limb...
pins and needles,
nice to know you,
goodbye!

Deeper than the deepest Cousteau would ever go.
And higher than the heights of what we often think we know.
Blessed she who clearly sees the wood for the trees.
To obtain a 'bird's eye' is to turn a blizzard into a breeze.

I haven't felt the way I feel today
in so long it's hard for me to specify.
I'm beginning to notice how much this feels like a waking limb...
pins and needles,
nice to know you...
goodbye!

So could it be that it has been there all along?

Incubus will always be that one in a million band. Back in the late 90’s early 2000’s their sound was so distinctive, just listening to the first few seconds on every song you knew it was Incubus. And still here in almost 2022, their sound has been almost impossible to replicate.

@Rise-ce1wb
