Their first release in 1985 was a seven-inch single named "Crazy Game", with the B-side "Everybody's Waiting (for Someone to Come Home)". That same year, the Indigo Girls released a six-track Extended play album named "Indigo Girls", and in 1987 released their first full-length album, Strange Fire, recorded at John Keane Studio in Athens, Georgia, and including "Crazy Game". With this release, they secured the services of Russell Carter, who remains their manager to the present; they had first approached him when the EP album was released, but he told them their songs were "immature" and they were not likely to get a record deal.
They were signed to Epic Records in 1989 and won the Grammy for best contemporary folk album later that year (for their self titled release) Some of their hit songs include "Galileo," "Closer to Fine," and "Shame on You."
Aside from being musicians, Ray and Saliers are activists, constantly supporting causes like gun control, women's rights, Native American rights, environmental protection, the abolition of the death penalty, and as lesbians themselves, LGBT rights. They constantly devote their time and money to such causes, often playing benefit concerts.
Ray and Saliers both have side projects. Ray owns and founded Daemon Records, an independent label based in Decatur. She also has a career as a solo artist, and has released two albums thus far. Saliers is the part owner of Watershed, a restaurant and wine bar in Decatur.
Together, the Indigo Girls are constantly touring. Their new album, Poseidon and the Bitter Bug, was released March 24, 2009.
Fill It Up Again

Lost my something and I can't get it back
Or a kill on your trophy rack
I checked my schedule now my train is rolling down a track
Past the sadness of the salt flats
To the prospect of the land fat
Or just a lazy orange house cat
On the sofa where I'll be put up
You've been my hole in my sky
You're my shrinking water supply
Before my well runs dry
I'm going round round round the bend
Fill it up again
I'd like to say that it was clear to me
Love triangle geometry
But in the end it's still a mystery
The placement of affection and the disarray
I gathered up the courage that it took
Made that bed and took one last look
And you could hear the pages flapping in the wind blown
Book of my days, my days
You've been my hole in my sky
You're my shrinking water supply
Before my well runs dry
I'm going round round round the bend
Fill it up again
One tank gone second thoughts are on my mind
What's this trip gonna cost me this time
The devil I know is starting to look awfully kind
But the new road is an old friend
Fill it up again
Hole in my sky
My sky, my sky
Hole in my sky
My sky, my sky
Hole in my sky
My sky, my sky
You been my hole in my sky (hole in my sky)
My shrinking water supply (my shrinking water supply)
Before my well runs dry (before my well runs dry)
You've been the hole in my sky (I'm going round round round the bend)
My shrinking water supply (to fill it up again)
Before my well runs dry
Before my well runs dry
I'm going round round round the bend
Fill it up again
The song "Fill It Up Again" by Indigo Girls describes the struggles of a person who has lost something but doesn't want to be seen as a sad sack or a trophy for someone else. The singer has a feeling of emptiness that they can't seem to fill, so they get on a train and leave everything behind, hoping to find something to fill the void. The song suggests that the singer is in a love triangle, where they are unsure of their feelings and are trying to define their relationships.
The lyrics "Won't have you see me as your sad sack/Lost my something and I can't get it back/Or a kill on your trophy rack" indicate that the singer doesn't want to be seen as a loser who lost something or as a person who is just a trophy for someone else. The song suggests the singer has gone through a hard time and is trying to overcome it by escaping and finding something new.
In the chorus, the singer speaks to someone who has been an important part of their life, "You've been my hole in my sky/You're my shrinking water supply/Before my well runs dry/I'm going round round round the bend/Fill it up again." Here, they acknowledge that this person was the only thing that stood between them and complete emptiness.
Overall, "Fill It Up Again" is a song about the journey of discovery and finding something meaningful to fill the emptiness. The song's theme is relatable to anyone who has struggled with loss and the feeling of not knowing what to do next.
