Their first release in 1985 was a seven-inch single named "Crazy Game", with the B-side "Everybody's Waiting (for Someone to Come Home)". That same year, the Indigo Girls released a six-track Extended play album named "Indigo Girls", and in 1987 released their first full-length album, Strange Fire, recorded at John Keane Studio in Athens, Georgia, and including "Crazy Game". With this release, they secured the services of Russell Carter, who remains their manager to the present; they had first approached him when the EP album was released, but he told them their songs were "immature" and they were not likely to get a record deal.
They were signed to Epic Records in 1989 and won the Grammy for best contemporary folk album later that year (for their self titled release) Some of their hit songs include "Galileo," "Closer to Fine," and "Shame on You."
Aside from being musicians, Ray and Saliers are activists, constantly supporting causes like gun control, women's rights, Native American rights, environmental protection, the abolition of the death penalty, and as lesbians themselves, LGBT rights. They constantly devote their time and money to such causes, often playing benefit concerts.
Ray and Saliers both have side projects. Ray owns and founded Daemon Records, an independent label based in Decatur. She also has a career as a solo artist, and has released two albums thus far. Saliers is the part owner of Watershed, a restaurant and wine bar in Decatur.
Together, the Indigo Girls are constantly touring. Their new album, Poseidon and the Bitter Bug, was released March 24, 2009.
Share the Moon

Two days without bawling
Three days without missing
But a lifetime of no kissing you
Is something that I just can't do
I wish I could be there
To share the moon
More callous for making
A lifetime for the aching
I got no need to run this battery down
I'm just trying to get the stains out
I wish I could be there
To share the moon
Hey la la
I'm gonna love to you till it hurts
I don't mind if I do
Hey la la
I'm gonna love you till it works
I've got no mind to lose
Theres one trash heap burning
Fireflies are returning
Nightfall is softly chirping
One trailer light is staying on till dawn
I wonder who it's waiting on
I wish I could be there
To share the moon
Hey la la
I'm gonna love to you till it hurts
So don't mind if I do
Hey la la
I'm gonna love you till it works
I've got no mind to lose
The Indigo Girls' song "Share the Moon" talks about longing for a particular person and the difficulty of being away from them. The song opens with a list of things that the singer can go without, including calling and missing this person, but she cannot imagine a life without kissing them. This is a powerful demonstration of the depth of their connection and how essential it is to their happiness. She wishes they could be together to "share the moon" which is a poetic way of saying they desire to share intimate moments together.
The lyrics move on to a sense of resilience in the face of hardship. The singer has been through pain and heartache, noting that she has "more callous for making" and "a lifetime for the aching." However, this doesn't mean she is giving up. She has no need to "run this battery down" and is focused on "getting the stains out." Here, "stains" might represent past mistakes, struggles, or heartbreaks, and the resilience she feels in overcoming them. However, the ultimate message is that she wishes to be with this person to enjoy the simple things, like watching the fireflies at night or sitting under the moon together.
Overall, the song portrays a deep connection between two people who are meant to be together despite difficult trials along the way. The imagery in the song makes it easy to visualize the scenes of a quiet night watching the fireflies or sharing the moon. It is a poignant reminder of how much we need the people we love and how much better life is when we share it with them.

Sometimes I think you give the gift of sanity to others when you produce music from such a real, deeply emotional place. Thank you (all involved) for sharing that place with us so that we, too, may recognize and access that place within ourselves. (I'm trying to get into graduate school today, writing my personal statement, and this is the best kind of inspiration to keep at it!)

The first time I'm seeing this video unbelievably. I've only seen her perform it live and always loved the simplicity and meaning of the song. She said in an interview a few days ago that of all the songs she has written, this is the one she believes is her best.

Man, this reminds me of a time in my life when my heart was soft and melted like honey and I felt as if the stars would sing to me every night... but this brought me back. Love this song 😭❤️

I like to think of the clapping as a form of community cooperation and sharing - as well as a a space in the song where we can all come together...where anyone can join in and "share the moon."
