By 1988, however, Ini Kamoze had effectively disappeared from the music scene following lukewarm reactions to his intermittent releases.
In 1994, Kamoze burst back onto the scene with a harder sound and the song which would become his signature - "Here Comes The Hotstepper". Adopting his nickname from the song title, Kamoze would become known as the "Hotstepper", from the Patois for a man on the run from the law. The infectious song found its way onto several soundtracks, including the fashion-industry satire, "Prêt-à-Porter". The resulting video featured a much more solid Kamoze and the obligatory scantily-clad women for this genre of music. "Hotstepper" still remains one of dancehall's more well-known hits, with its call-and-response chorus of "Here come de hotstepper - MURDERER (often misheard as "Word it up") - I'm de lyrical gangsta - MURDERER" lighting up clubs worldwide. "Here Comes The Hotstepper" remains Kamoze's only US #1 hit (see Hot 100 No. 1 Hits of 1994).

Gunshot respect not, booma
Gunshot in the respect notch
Shot, respect not, gunshot in the respect notch
Now cats and dogs and men and people
For some it's good and some, stupid evil
For Kings and Queens and El Presidente
Shot, respect not, booma
Gunshot in the respect notch
Shot, respect not
Gunshot in the respect notch
Hey dunno what a bullet won't do, hey
Even the minister and the sinister
A marine of Brigadista
Some win, some lose
And some skip across the border
When men were bold
This thing wasn't plenty
Now that heaven and earth are old
Hey, one fool makes many
Gunshot respect not, skeng-eh
Gunshot in the respect notch
Shot, respect not, skeng-eh
Gun shot in the respect notch
Ow, oh, oh
Run for cover
I dunno what a bullet won't do
Follow you round the corner
Follow you across the border
When it hits, it hurts
Throw ya down in the dirt
They have to cover ya with earth
Hey, hey, hey
Tear drops like rainbow
Even the minister and the sinister
A marine of Brigadista
Some win, some lose
And some skip across the border
When men were bold
This killin' wasn't plenty
Now that heaven and earth are old
Hey, one fool makes many
Gunshot respect not, skeng-eh
Gunshot in the respect notch
Shot, respect not
Gunshot in the respect notch
Ow, ow, ow
Run for cover
I dunno what a bullet won't do
Hey, I dunno what a bullet won't do
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Follow you 'round the corner
Follow you across the border
Tracks you down to ya mother
Running you down into the streets and lanes
Hits the juice out of ya veins, hey, hey
I dunno what a bullet won't do
Hey, hey, hey, hey
I dunno what a bullet won't do, hey
Gunshot respect not, skeng-eh
Gunshot in the respect notch
Shot, respect not
Gun shot in the respect notch, ow, ow, ow
The song "Gunshot" by Ini Kamoze is a commentary on the destructive power of gun violence. The lyrics describe how a gunshot does not discriminate, affecting everyone from the most powerful leaders to ordinary people, and ultimately leading to death and destruction. The chorus repeats the phrase "Gunshot respect not," emphasizing the lack of respect for human life that is inherent in gun violence.
Throughout the song, Kamoze contrasts the violence of guns with the beauty of life, using imagery such as tears like rainbows and the earth covering the dead. The lyrics also touch on the idea that violence begets violence, with the line "one fool makes many" suggesting that one act of violence can lead to a cycle of revenge and retaliation.
The song ends with a grim portrayal of the consequences of gun violence, with the image of a person being hunted down and killed, their blood drained from their body. Overall, "Gunshot" is a powerful message against the use of guns as a means of resolving conflicts or asserting power.
