He worked with Svend Asmussen, the jazz violinist, during the 1940s and part of the 1950s.
During the late 1950s he changed his stage name to Jørgen Ingmann and his guitar. Under this name he recorded "Apache" in 1961, which charted at #4 in Canada and #2 in the United States. He remade Silvana Mangano's "Anna" with moderate US chart success.
Songs of his included "Tequila" (which he also recorded during the 60s, with the Champs) and a version of Pinetop Perkins' "Pinetop's Boogie Woogie" (from 1962).
He worked as a member of the duet, Grethe & Jørgen Ingmann, together with his wife Grethe Ingmann. After winning the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix competition in 1963, they went on to represent Denmark at the Eurovision Song Contest where they won with the song "Dansevise" (Dance Ballad), music by Otto Francker and lyrics by Sejr Volmer-Sørensen.
He and Grethe met in 1955, married in 1956, and divorced in 1975.

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
The song "Far Jeg Kan Ikke Få Hul På Kokosnødden" by Jørgen Ingmann is a humorous song about a child's attempt to open a coconut, but all attempts eventually leading to various accidents. The song begins with the child asking his father for help to open the coconut, but despite the child's efforts to open the coconut with a hammer, stepping on it, and even using explosives, he fails. Throughout the song, the child narrates his failed attempts to open the coconut, which resulted in various unforeseen circumstances, such as breaking the table, dropping the lamp, and destroying the house.
The song is a comical take on the struggles of life and how even in the face of failure, things can still remain unchanged. The child's constant failures in opening the coconut mirror the struggles that people face in their own lives. Despite multiple attempts, sometimes things just don't work out the way they want it to, but that doesn't mean they should give up.

My dear father, I have been trying all day but I cannot crack open the coconut
Jeg har hamret på den hele dagen
I have been hitting it with a hammer for hours
Først så knækked' hammerens øverste del
The top part of the hammer broke first
Bordet det knak
The table made a loud noise
Og jeg fik et hak
And I got a cut
Men nødden den var hel
But the coconut was still intact
When I stepped on it, there was a loud sound
Lampen faldt ned
The lamp fell down
Fordi jeg pluds'lig gled
Because I suddenly slipped
Men til gengæld ligner kokosnødden sig selv
But on the bright side, the coconut still looks the same
Our piano didn't look good after all, don't you think?
Alle strengene sprang
All the strings broke
Da låget sagde bang
When the lid went bang
Til gengæld ligner kokosnødden sig selv
But still, the coconut looks the same
La-la-la
La-la-la
Ikke engang med krudt og dynamit
Not even with explosives
I found a bag of flour
Sikke et brag
What a noise
Så røg vores tag
Our roof flew away
Men nødden den var hel
But the coconut was still intact
I think we need to get a room in a hotel
Huset er væk
The house is gone
Der ligger kun en hæk
There's only a fence left
Men til gengæld ligner kokosnødden sig selv
But still, the coconut looks the same
Our house didn't look good after all, don't you think?
Nu er der kun et hul
Now there's only a hole
Der er ikke engang et gulv
There's not even a floor
