Nothing you have ever seen on a sound stage has ever NOT been discussed and worked out in advance in some fashion. Usually at least partially scripted but people also just work out routines in REHEARSAL (what do you think happens at these rehearsals they are always talking openly about on these shows?) But nothing is ever not a show. Even reality tv and improve are coached and reshot and edited into a narrative from hours of film. It's virtually never real even when its supposed to have been someone breaking with what they agreed upon in the backstage pre-interview where they go over each thing they will discuss. There's a handful of people that broke out and did things against the script and they were mostly pushed out of the business and shunned. Its the real reason the media made punk rock out to be the end of the world, they kept being themselves. Norm Macdonald has done it, Andy Kaufman mainly staged the famous moments but not always with the stage manager, producer or crews knowledge, Crispin Glover got away with it because it was Letterman and as much as they complained about Madonna, Cher, Drew Barrymore etc the show was ultimately about those sort of things, even if dave was thoroughly against being unprofessional and breaking FCC guidelines. Harvey Pekar, writer of the excellent "American Splendor" did it and was never invited back...ended his mainstream career until they made a movie about him. Honestly it generally resulted in being blacklisted. It was considered a sin to be "real" in television and still is. They won't let most people on live tv for that reason unless its local...even with the tape delay or these days digital delay where they can edit it on the fly. It's unheard of for a real event to transpire in the studio, that's what a studio/soundstage is, a place where you make film, not a place where you film "make." I see this all the time, people talking about how mean some guest is being treated when they came in asking for those set ups because they play dumb or act like a persecuted nerd or whatever their schtick is. Even when they later say things in interviews thats just marketing. It's all advertising a product that is available for a fee, directly or indirectly. Even when they are on the news crying about how they got treated in most cases, everything. EVERYTHING. It's not even that convincing in most cases.

Everyone was probably very shocked when Will Smith did that. I know they had a conversation with Will though and told him to leave. But he refused to leave and for some reason they didn't want to force him to leave. Guessing the reason was cause he's a famous and beloved actor.
