Confidence and reliance are the
Art of finding you if you don't have a
Sudden sense of self-worth
You listen to what others have to
Say every time and be swayed
By their insistence of what is
Wrong and what is right
Ya zimme!
This is how it goes
When you living life on the road
Cops come kickinβ in ya door
They said you broke the law
Excuses they don't wanna know
They lock you up and throw you in jail
I seen it all before
Maybe like a million times or more
Thatβs why I keep the toolie in the jar
'Cause I'm nobody's dog
And I know bodies will be on the floor
And I don't want it to be me, lord
And every time that I leave
Mum won't stop praying 'til I come home
'Cause Iβm outchea
Doing all the things that she canβt condone
I can see my reflection
But my identityβs still unknown
Rolling on my enemies with a one pop
Tryna kill two birds with one stone
I said the streets is a gun zone, gun zone
You haffi lookout for gun clone
Love square we a claim so dem run town
Ghetto circle dem boy they will run round
We run the compound
So when we see feds we no jump 'round
Stand up on di corner wi me hands fold
We got de console, we in a control
Man I ride for my team
Tracksuit's full of residue
Likkle man this is a life that you never knew
You couldnβt spend a week in my crepes
My block breezy baguettes
Yuh nuh know what a gun is
How yuh fi say yuh a di baddest
A when yuh hear (Pop) you a vanish
Mi know dat from east
Landan to crystal palace
Wi will mek yuh disappear like magic
This is how it goes
When you living life on the road

They said you broke the law
Excuses they don't wanna know
They lock you up and throw you in jail

'Cause I'm nobody's dog
And I know bodies will be on the floor
And I don't want it to be me, lord
Yo dem brothers donβt like me
It can never be an issue
I got dirt on my hands I
Canβt wipe with a tissue
School kids that bang sticks and
Canβt even tell time
Thatβs when detention turns into jail time
You gotta watch your friends
Everybodyβs tryna eat
And free P heβs the last of a dying breed
I wish I could rewind itβs a eye for a eye
The blind following blind
My spirit dem really waan fi tackle
Mind me affi slap dem wid a snapple
Throw dem inna jail who yuh waan fi shackle
Wi dun know it is a spiritual battle
So oh eventually they are with
Some nunchakus and mi nackas
Just in case yuh wanna tap one of mi choppas
Tun in yuh body lie, no gimme no apple
Ghetto rebel youts comin' at yuh
This is how it goes
When you living life on the road
Cops come kickinβ in ya door
They said you broke the law

The lyrics to J Hus's song "How It Goes" convey a message of self-reliance, resilience, and the realities of living life on the streets. The song begins with the importance of relying on oneself and finding confidence and self-worth within. It emphasizes the need to trust one's own feelings rather than being swayed by the opinions and judgments of others.
The chorus explores the harsh realities of living a life on the road and the encounters with law enforcement. It depicts the constant fear of police raids, being accused of breaking the law, and the lack of empathy or interest in hearing one's excuses. The lyrics also touch upon the familiarity of such situations, emphasizing the need to stay prepared and vigilant, hence the reference to keeping a weapon ("toolie") in a jar to protect oneself.
The second verse delves into the personal struggles and conflicts faced by the artist. It portrays the tensions between following his own path and the disapproval of his mother, who prays for his safe return while he engages in activities she cannot condone. The lyrics suggest a battle with identity, with the artist's reflection being visible but still holding an unknown sense of self. The verse further alludes to the constant threats and enemies one encounters, comparing it to trying to kill two birds with one stone.
The subsequent verses touch on themes of crime, street life, and the challenges faced by individuals in disadvantaged communities. J Hus references his loyalty to his team and the residue of illegal activities found on his tracksuit. He also dismisses claims of others being the toughest or the baddest, asserting that their toughness disappears when faced with real danger. The lyrics highlight the influence of street life on young individuals, with school detentions potentially leading to jail time. The need to watch one's friends is emphasized, as everyone is looking out for their own interests in a competitive environment.
Overall, "How It Goes" talks about the realities and struggles of life on the streets, emphasizing the importance of self-reliance, resilience, and staying prepared for the challenges that come along the way.
