Scott was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and raised in Detroit, an Italian hillbilly who worshipped Hank Williams, and became a rock and roll star. His first album, entitled Jack Scott. One of the first album recorded in stereo, it contained a mixture of rockabilly and ballads of which 10 were Scott's own compositions.
Recording for Carlton he came up with a rocking song about a friend in prison titled Leroy. The other side of the record was a sad ballad called My True Love.
Both songs were a smash in the Summer of 1958, the first going to #11 and the other as far as number 3 in Billboard's and made the Top Ten in Britain.
He followed it with Geraldine backed by With Your Love, the latter of which was a minor hit, With Your Love made Number 28 in the US later that year, Goodbye Baby peaked at Number 8 early in 1959 and was followed by The Way I Walk, a Top Forty hit that Robert Gordon revived in 1978.
Scott transferred to the new Top Rank label in 1959 and scored another huge success in the New Year with "What In The World's Come Over You." The song gave Scott his second gold disc, reaching Number 5 in the USA and Number 6 in the UK. Further successes followed Burning Bridge" (Number 3), Cool Water"/"It Only Happened Yesterday" but Scott was by then being steered towards a mainstream country style.
Listen and compare his "Blues stay away from me" with Bob Dylan’s, "Rainy Day Woman Numbers 12 and 35".
What in the Worlds Come over You
Jack Scott Lyrics

Seems we never get along
(Ooh, ah, ah, ah)
Every night
I reminisce dreaming of your tender kisses
What in the world's come over you?
(Wah, wah, ooh)
(Ah, ah, ah)
If you do, I'll still be here, dear
Waiting, longing for you
(Ah, ah, ah)
All my life, I've loved you so
Never dreamed, I'd miss you so
Now, alone in my room each night
My heart it cries, "It's just not right"
Oh, oh, oh
What in the world's come over you?
Could you ever change your mind?
(Ah, ah, ah)
If you do, I'll still be here, dear
Waiting, longing for you
(Ah, ah, ah)
All my life, I've loved you so
Never dreamed, I'd miss you so
Now, alone in my room each night
My heart, it cries, "It's just not right"
Oh, oh, oh
What in the world's come over you?
(Wah, wah, ooh)
You're still my angel from above
(Ah, ah, ah)
Guess, you'll always be my one
And only, only real love
The song "What In The World's Come Over You" by Jack Scott is a ballad about a person's enduring love for someone who seems to have changed. The song opens with a question, "What in the world's come over you?" which is likely directed at the person the singer is singing to. The next line, "Seems we never get along," suggests that something has changed in the relationship and the two are having difficulty communicating effectively.
The singer then states that they "reminisce" each night about "tender kisses," which suggests that they are remembering a relationship that was once much happier than it is now. The chorus then repeats the opening question, and the singer asks if the other person could change their mind. The singer promises to remain faithful and wait for their love, even if they do not return.
The final verse repeats the first verse but with slight variations. The singer states that they always loved the other person and had never dreamed that they would miss them so much. The line "Now, alone in my room each night, my heart it cries, 'It's just not right'" further emphasizes the pain and isolation the singer is feeling. The song ends on a slightly hopeful note as the singer acknowledges the other person as their "one and only real love."
Overall, the song is a poignant portrayal of love and heartbreak, with Scott's voice conveying the emotions of the singer in a raw and powerful way.

In the 41 months between June of 1958 and November 1961 Jack Scott 19 Charts Records in Billboard Magazine.
I grew up in Winnipeg. Jack was My Hero.
I didn't know it at the time but Winnipeg was about to become The Rock & Roll Capital of Canada. Just ask Neil Young. Jack Scott 'Lit The Fuse' .
When My Friends and I read that Jack was Canadian we were thrilled. Up until then all the 'Teen Music' on The Radio came from The U.S. Jack's Success inspired us. Just ask Burton Cummings. Suddenly it seemed like every kid in Winnipeg was in A Band. I was a lousy Drummer so I went into Radio. Along the way I produced Radio Documentaries on The Beatles, Elvis and The Evolution of Rock and did tons of Interviews....but was afraid to interview Jack. What if he wasn't a Nice Guy?
It was 1976, Jack was recording for Dot Records. He had just got on The Country Chart with 'You're Not Getting Older You're Getting Better"....so I tracked him down and phoned him. If I come from Toronto can we do an Interview?
We met at a Hotel in Windsor Ontario. I knew more about Jack than he remembered. I told him that, when I interviewed Gordon Stoker of The Jordanaires Stoker told me that Elvis once played Goodbye Baby and told The Group that if The Jordanaires 'couldn't keep up' he'd get 'that Jack Scott Vocal Group'.
Over the years Jack and I stayed in touch. Occasionally I was able to help him.
In 1982 his first Greatest Hits LP was on Toronto's Attic Records. Tom Jones released What In The World. Then during The Gulf War in 1991 Jack headlined the annual Winter Dance Party in Clear Lake Iowa. It was where he debuted The Rock & Rolling National Anthem. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqmST-dMM3A.
We finally got Jack to perform in Winnipeg. It was 1999. The Show Sold Out. He came again two years later. Another Sell Out. Burton Cummings was the MC.
But you've got to know when to 'Fold Them'.
Jack Headlined a Rockabilly Show in Las Vegas, went off to England to do it again and then flew to Finland and a final LP. He was inducted into The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and when COVID is over he'll finally be in The Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame.
Jack Scott never became The Star he could have been or should have been. But The Musicians knew him.
In 1975 Jack played England for the first time. After The Show a guy asked Jack to personalize an Autograph. Jack said sure. What's your name? It was Robert Plant.
Jack had never heard of Robert but knew of Led Zeppelin.
A few months later Zep went on tour and sent an Airplane to bring Jack and his wife Barb to NYC., I asked him if he heard any Jack Scott Influence. He didn't. So the next time we got together I played him Hot Dog. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVdpMN3xkWo

Back in the 50's and 60's when rock and roll singers could actually sing. So glad I grew up in the 50's and 60's. There will never be anything like it.
@rljrl
