DAY BY DAY
Jackie Gleason Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some day you will seek me and find me
Some day of the days that shall be
Surely you will come and remind me
Of a dream that is calling for you and for me

Some day when the winter is over
Some day in the flush of the spring
My soul shall discover the soul born for her lover
The man with the heart of a king

Surely you will come and remind me
Of a dream that is calling for you and for me

Some day when the winter is over
Some day in the flush of the spring

My soul shall discover the soul born for her lover
The man with the heart of a king

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jackie Gleason's song "Some Day" evoke a longing for a future love that is meant to be, but has not yet arrived. The song speaks of an intense connection between two people that is waiting to be discovered, and suggests that this connection has been pre-determined, that it is something fateful and inevitable. The repeated phrasing of "surely you will come and remind me/of a dream that is calling for you and for me" suggests a kind of reassurance, a faith in the idea that the other person will arrive at just the right time.

The imagery of the changing seasons - the winter, the spring - adds to this sense of expectation, of anticipation. There is a sense that something significant is just beyond the horizon, and that when it does arrive, it will be momentous. The final line, "the man with the heart of a king," is also significant - it suggests that this future love will be noble, strong, and worthy of the singer's devotion.

Overall, "Some Day" is a hopeful, passionate song about the power of love and the belief that destiny will ultimately bring two people together.

My favorite Jackie Gleason performance was "Requiem for a Heavyweight" , where Jackie plays a corrupt boxing manager. In my opinion, Jackie showed his incredible acting ability in this very serious role. If you haven't seen it, you have a memorable treat waiting for you.

Gleason was one of the best entertainers that the World has ever known.

@Mickey N Getting back to you, I checked this out and the actress who played Ralph's M.I.L. was Ethel Waite Owen. Yes, she was not a household name, but had extensive stage acting credits and was kept very busy during the Golden Age of Television, when they performed a lot of stage productions before the cameras. I also was sure I had seen her before on 50's TV, because yes , she seemed familiar. Gotta admit, she was well cast on HONEYMOONERS!! She passed away in 1997 at the age of 103

@Catherine Hazur Cathy, I don't believe she did. I can picture the actress that did, I just don't know her name.
