Gleason could not read or write music in a conventional sense; he was said to have conceived melodies in his head and described them vocally to staff help. He did likewise with the well-remembered themes of both The Jackie Gleason Show ("Melancholy Serenade") and The Honeymooners ("You're My Greatest Love"). There has been some controversy over the years as to how much credit Gleason should have received for the finished products; it has been written that beyond the possible conceptualizing of many of the songs, Gleason had no direct involvement such as conducting in the making of these recordings. However, his main musical companion, cornetist and trumpeter Bobby Hackett once said: "Jackie knows a lot more about music than people give him credit for. I have seen him conduct a sixty-piece orchestra and detect one discordant note in the brass section. He would immediately stop the music and locate the wrong note. It always amazed the professional musicians how a guy who technically did not know one note from another could do that. And he was never wrong."

Don't Blame Me
Jackie Gleason Lyrics

I've hung around you just like a fool
Falling head and heels in love like a kid out of school.
My poor heart is in an awful state now
But it's too late now to call a halt
So if I become a nuisance it's all your fault!
Don't blame me for falling in love with you
I'm under your spell but how can I help it!
Don't' blame me!
Can't you see when you do the things you do!
If I can't conceal the thrill that I'm feeling,
Don't blame; me.
Ican't help it if that doggoned moon above
Makes me need someone like you to love!
Blame your kiss as sweet as a kiss can be
And blame all your charms that melt in my arms
But don't blame me.
I like every single thing about you
Without a doubt you are like a dream
In my mind I find a picture of us as a team
Ever since the hour of our meeting
I've been repeating a silly phrase
Hoping that you'll understand me one of these days.
The song "Don't Blame Me" by Jackie Gleason is a classic love song about giving into the feelings of love for someone. The lyrics describe falling in love head over heels with someone and feeling helpless to resist the emotions that come with it. The singer admits that their heart is in an "awful state" and they may become a nuisance, but ultimately, it's not their fault for falling in love. The chorus repeats the phrase "Don't blame me" as a plea for understanding and forgiveness.
The song captures the experience of being swept off your feet by someone, unable to resist their charms and feeling powerless to control your emotions. The imagery of the moon above creating a need for love adds to the romantic notion of being helplessly drawn to someone. The final lines of the chorus, "Blame your kiss as sweet as a kiss can be, And blame all your charms that melt in my arms, But don't blame me," encapsulate the idea that the singer is willing to take responsibility for their actions, but not for the uncontrollable feelings that come with falling in love.
Overall, "Don't Blame Me" is a timeless love song that beautifully captures the experience of being consumed by feelings of love and desire.
