Gleason could not read or write music in a conventional sense; he was said to have conceived melodies in his head and described them vocally to staff help. He did likewise with the well-remembered themes of both The Jackie Gleason Show ("Melancholy Serenade") and The Honeymooners ("You're My Greatest Love"). There has been some controversy over the years as to how much credit Gleason should have received for the finished products; it has been written that beyond the possible conceptualizing of many of the songs, Gleason had no direct involvement such as conducting in the making of these recordings. However, his main musical companion, cornetist and trumpeter Bobby Hackett once said: "Jackie knows a lot more about music than people give him credit for. I have seen him conduct a sixty-piece orchestra and detect one discordant note in the brass section. He would immediately stop the music and locate the wrong note. It always amazed the professional musicians how a guy who technically did not know one note from another could do that. And he was never wrong."

The Love Nest
Jackie Gleason Lyrics

Like a dove breast, down on the farm,
A veranda with some sort of clinging vine,
Then a kitchen where some rambler roses twine,
In a small room, tea set of blue,
There's the ball room, dream room for two,
Better than a palace with a gilded dome,
Is the love nest you can call home!
"The Love Nest" by Jackie Gleason is a song about a small and comfortable living space, often referred to as a "love nest." The song paints a picture of a cozy and warm home, much like a dove's breast on a farm, with a lovely veranda adorned with a clinging vine. The kitchen is home to rambler roses which twine around the walls. Inside, there is a small room where a blue tea set resides. The ballroom is a dream room for two, a place where they can dance and be together. The song equates this small and intimate space to a palace with a gilded dome, that they can call home.
The Love Nest is a song that evokes images of a peaceful and simple life, surrounded by the ones we love. The lyrics suggest that even the smallest of spaces can be as grand and magnificent as a palace, as long as there is love within its walls. The song is a reminder that love, intimacy, and warmth are the most important things in life, and they can be found in even the humblest of places.
