Gleason could not read or write music in a conventional sense; he was said to have conceived melodies in his head and described them vocally to staff help. He did likewise with the well-remembered themes of both The Jackie Gleason Show ("Melancholy Serenade") and The Honeymooners ("You're My Greatest Love"). There has been some controversy over the years as to how much credit Gleason should have received for the finished products; it has been written that beyond the possible conceptualizing of many of the songs, Gleason had no direct involvement such as conducting in the making of these recordings. However, his main musical companion, cornetist and trumpeter Bobby Hackett once said: "Jackie knows a lot more about music than people give him credit for. I have seen him conduct a sixty-piece orchestra and detect one discordant note in the brass section. He would immediately stop the music and locate the wrong note. It always amazed the professional musicians how a guy who technically did not know one note from another could do that. And he was never wrong."

Everything's Coming Up Roses
Jackie Gleason Lyrics

Gotta have the whole world on a plate
Starting here, starting now
Honey, everything's coming up roses!
Clear the decks, clear the tracks,
You got nothing to do but relax
Blow a kiss, take a bow
Honey, everything's coming up roses!
Now it's your inning
Stand the world on it's ear
Said it's spinning
That'll be just the beginning
Curtain up, light the lights
You got nothing to hit, but the heights
You'll be swell, you'll be great
I can tell, just you wait
The lucky star I talk about is due
Honey, everything's coming up roses
For me and for you!
You can do it
All you need is a hand
We can do it
Momma is gonna see to it
Curtain up, light the lights
We got nothing to hit but the heights
I can tell, wait and see
There's a bell, follow me
And nothing's gonna stop us Till we're through
Honey, everything's coming up roses And`daffodils
Everything's coming up Sunshine and Santa Claus
Everything's gotta be Bright lights and lollipops
Everything's coming up roses
For me and for you
The lyrics of "Everything's Coming Up Roses" are sung by the lead character of the musical "Gypsy," Rose, who is determined to make her young daughter into a star during the vaudeville era. The song is an anthem about overcoming all odds and succeeding in the end. The opening lyrics, "You'll be swell, you'll be great. Gotta have the whole world on a plate," set the tone for the rest of the song as Rose tries to persuade her daughter to follow in her footsteps and become a star. She is confident in her daughter's abilities and in her own power to make it happen.
The lyrics then shift to a more general message of determination and perseverance, with lines like "Now it's your inning, stand the world on its ear" and "You got nothing to hit but the heights." Rose is urging everyone, not just her daughter, to take advantage of the opportunities presented to them and to strive for greatness. The chorus of the song, "Everything's coming up roses," is a metaphor for success and happiness. Rose believes that if they work hard enough and keep pushing themselves, they will achieve their dreams.
