Real Live Girl
Jackie Gleason Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pardon me miss
But I've never done this
With a real live girl
What could be harmful
In holding an armful

Of a real live girl
Pardon me if you're affectionate squeeze
Fogs up my goggles and
Buckles my knees
I'm simply drown in the sight, and the sounds,
And the scent and the feel

Of a real live girl
Nothing can beat getting swept off your feet
By a real live girl
Dreams of you but don't compare with a hunk
Of a real live girl
Girl's were to girlish

Was once my belief
Whata reversal and what a relief
I'll take the flowering hat
And the towering hill

And the squeal of a real live girl
I've seen photographs and faximilies
That have set my heart off in a whirl
But I over look everyone in the book
For a real live girl
Take your vernecion or romanaprrection
Ideal live girl

Go be a hold out for Helen of Troy
I am a healthy American Boy
And I rather gape at the dear little shape of the stir

And the kill of a real live girl
Full time, occasional all operational girl

Overall Meaning

In "Real Live Girl," Jackie Gleason provides a lighthearted hymn to the beauty of women. He's never held a real live girl before, and he's delighting in every moment of it. The lyrics describe the physical sensations of being near a woman- the way her touch can make him feel giddy, the way her scent fills his head, and the way the sound of her voice makes his heart skip a beat. He's clearly overjoyed to be in the company of a real, breathing, and feeling woman.

The lyrics use the device of exaggeration to emphasize the beauty of the real live girl. Gleason notes that no dream, photograph, or even faximilies (presumably of beautiful actresses or models) can compare with the presence of an actual woman. He also notes that his prior belief was that girls were "too girlish," but he's come around to appreciate them fully. He sings without any hint of cynicism, but rather with pure joy and exhilaration.

The song's lyrics evoke a simpler time when men might be content simply holding a woman's arm. It's also a reflection of a time when the concept of men and women separating their lives was at its height, and men typically referred to women as girls. Ultimately, the song is a celebration of the beauty of women and the joys of being in the company of a real live girl.

He was and still is larger than life. I was born in 1976 but I wish I could have been part of this time. It seems to be a very magical moment. Unlike today's world of horror.

Born in the 50’s. It was.

This is my absolute favorite moment from the Honeymooners. Genuine and heart felt, from Ralph’s monologue to the actors as themselves. Great stuff.

1956?

And from what I read of those who were there, monologues like that were not written down. Gleason just generally knew what he wanted to convey and made it up. It's more impressive knowing that his creating the words on the spot are very good and don't wander all over.

Greg Falco

Didn't expect a touching monologue like that in a 2 minute clip from the Honeymooners. RIP Jackie and his talented cast. Proof that television shows don't have to be vulgar to be entertaining.

David Venesky

If I could go back to this time I would. Jackie Gleason is a legend! I miss him as if he was a member of my family! RIP!

The way he describes Christmas in NYC is exactly how I've felt about it each and every year around that time. Gleason's words perfectly captured the mood.
