Gleason could not read or write music in a conventional sense; he was said to have conceived melodies in his head and described them vocally to staff help. He did likewise with the well-remembered themes of both The Jackie Gleason Show ("Melancholy Serenade") and The Honeymooners ("You're My Greatest Love"). There has been some controversy over the years as to how much credit Gleason should have received for the finished products; it has been written that beyond the possible conceptualizing of many of the songs, Gleason had no direct involvement such as conducting in the making of these recordings. However, his main musical companion, cornetist and trumpeter Bobby Hackett once said: "Jackie knows a lot more about music than people give him credit for. I have seen him conduct a sixty-piece orchestra and detect one discordant note in the brass section. He would immediately stop the music and locate the wrong note. It always amazed the professional musicians how a guy who technically did not know one note from another could do that. And he was never wrong."

I'll Never Be The Same
Jackie Gleason Lyrics

Stars have lost their meaning for me
I'll never be the same
Nothing's what it once use to be
And when the songbirds that sing
Tell me it's spring
I can't believe their song
Once love was king but kings can be wrong
There is such an ache in my heart
Never be the same since we're apart
Though there's a lot that a smile may hide
I know down deep inside
I'll never be the same never be the same again
I'll never be the same
Stars have lost their meaning for me
I'll never be the same
Nothing's what it once use to be
And when the songbirds that sing
Tell me it's spring
I can't believe their song
Once love was king but kings can be wrong
I'll never be the same
There is such an ache in my heart
Never be the same since we're apart
Though there's a lot that a smile may hide
I know down deep inside
This song, written by Matty Malneck and Frank Signorelli, is a poignant expression of loss and heartbreak. The singer laments that their world has been forever changed since the end of a relationship. The stars, a common symbol of hope and wonder, have lost their meaning for the singer. Nothing is the same as it once was, and the arrival of spring, which is typically associated with rebirth and renewal, only reminds them of what they have lost.
The singer also reflects on how love was once a dominant force in their life, represented by the image of kingship. Love was once their ruler, but even kings can be wrong, and the singer now realizes that they will never be the same again. There is an enduring ache in their heart that won't go away, despite their attempts to hide it with a smile.
Overall, the lyrics of this song capture the painful aftermath of a broken relationship and the lingering feelings of sadness and longing that accompany it. It is a poignant reminder of how loss can shape one's perception of the world around them and how difficult it can be to move on from a love that has been lost.
