Gleason could not read or write music in a conventional sense; he was said to have conceived melodies in his head and described them vocally to staff help. He did likewise with the well-remembered themes of both The Jackie Gleason Show ("Melancholy Serenade") and The Honeymooners ("You're My Greatest Love"). There has been some controversy over the years as to how much credit Gleason should have received for the finished products; it has been written that beyond the possible conceptualizing of many of the songs, Gleason had no direct involvement such as conducting in the making of these recordings. However, his main musical companion, cornetist and trumpeter Bobby Hackett once said: "Jackie knows a lot more about music than people give him credit for. I have seen him conduct a sixty-piece orchestra and detect one discordant note in the brass section. He would immediately stop the music and locate the wrong note. It always amazed the professional musicians how a guy who technically did not know one note from another could do that. And he was never wrong."

Love Locked Out
Jackie Gleason Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Love locked out may never come again.
Love locked out and weeping bitter tears,
No-one ever hears him calling.
No-one needs the precious gift he brings,
No-one heeds the song of love he sings,
On the door he beats his tiny wings,
A world without love is a world without life,
A sad world full of gloom,
So see there's a place for love in your heart,
Why, he doesn't need much room.
Love is well worth the waiting for,
When he comes knocking at your door,
Fling it wide open, for love locked out
Will come no more, no more.
Love is well worth the waiting for,
When he comes knocking at your door,
Fling it wide open, for love locked out
Will come no more, no more.
The lyrics of Jackie Gleason's song "Love Locked Out" are about the absence of love. The singer of the song is love itself, depicted as a small and fragile creature who is freezing and crying outside in the cold and rain because no one is allowing him in. Love is described as having no one to hear his cries, and nobody is recognizing the precious gift that he has to offer. The song highlights how the lack of love can result in a world that is full of sadness and despair. It encourages listeners to create room in their hearts for love, and when it comes knocking at their doors, to open them wide and embrace it.
