Gleason could not read or write music in a conventional sense; he was said to have conceived melodies in his head and described them vocally to staff help. He did likewise with the well-remembered themes of both The Jackie Gleason Show ("Melancholy Serenade") and The Honeymooners ("You're My Greatest Love"). There has been some controversy over the years as to how much credit Gleason should have received for the finished products; it has been written that beyond the possible conceptualizing of many of the songs, Gleason had no direct involvement such as conducting in the making of these recordings. However, his main musical companion, cornetist and trumpeter Bobby Hackett once said: "Jackie knows a lot more about music than people give him credit for. I have seen him conduct a sixty-piece orchestra and detect one discordant note in the brass section. He would immediately stop the music and locate the wrong note. It always amazed the professional musicians how a guy who technically did not know one note from another could do that. And he was never wrong."

The Moonlight
Jackie Gleason Lyrics

You certainly know the right thing to wear
Moonlight becomes you, I'm thrilled at the sight
And I could get so romantic tonight
You're all dressed up to go dreaming
Now don't tell me I'm wrong
And what a night to go dreaming
If I say I love you
I want you to know
It's not just because there's moonlight
Although, moonlight becomes you so
You're all dressed up to go dreaming
Now don't tell me I'm wrong
And what a night to go dreaming
Mind if I tag along
If I say I love you
I want you to know
It's not just because there's moonlight
Although, moonlight becomes you so
The song "Moonlight Becomes You" by Jackie Gleason is a delightful love ballad that talks about the transformational power of moonlight on the beauty of a person. The lyrics of the song are quite straightforward and easy to comprehend, but they convey deeper emotions of love and affection. The song essentially speaks of how a person's beauty is accentuated by the magical light of the moon, and how it has the potential to make the person feel more desirable and romantic. The opening line "Moonlight Becomes You, It goes with your hair" is a reference to how the moonlight shines on a person's hair, adding to their charm and allure.
The next line "You certainly know the right thing to wear" implies that the person has impeccable taste in fashion and knows how to present themselves in the best possible light. The lyrics further express the singer's admiration for the subject of their love, saying that the sight of the person in the moonlight thrills them, and they feel compelled to be romantic with them that very night. The lyrics take on a more poetic nature in the chorus, as the singer talks about the wonderful feeling of going out into the night, accompanied by the moonlight, to dream and explore the world. The final lines of the song reveal the singer's true intention, with them saying that they love the person not just because of the moonlight but because of who they are.
Overall, "Moonlight Becomes You" is a beautiful, romantic song that extols the transformative power of moonlight on the person, the night and love in general.
