Pretender
Jackson Browne/David Lindley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm going to rent myself a house
In the shade of the freeway
Gonna pack my lunch in the morning
And go to work each day
And when the evening rolls around
I'll go on home and lay my body down
And when the morning light comes streaming in
I'll get up and do it again
Amen.
Say it again
Amen.

I want to know what became of the changes
We waited for love to bring
Were they only the fitful dreams
Of some greater awakening?
I've been aware of the time going by
They say in the end it's the wink of an eye
When the morning light comes streaming in
You'll get up and do it again
Amen.

Caught between the longing for love
And the struggle for the legal tender
Where the sirens sing and the church bells ring
And the junk man pounds his fender.
Where the veterans dream of the fight
Fast asleep at the traffic light
And the children solemnly wait
For the ice cream vendor
Out into the cool of the evening
Strolls the Pretender
He knows that all his hopes and dreams
Begin and end there

Ah the laughter of the lovers
As they run through the night
Leaving nothing for the others
But to choose off and fight
And tear at the world with all their might
While the ships bearing their dreams
Sail out of sight

I'm gonna find myself a girl
Who can show me what laughter means
And we'll fill in the missing colors
In each other's paint-by-number dreams
And then we'll put our dark glasses on
And we'll make love until our strength is gone
And when the morning light comes streaming in
We'll get up and do it again
Get it up again

I'm gonna be a happy idiot
And struggle for the legal tender
Where the ads take aim and lay their claim
To the heart and the soul of the spender
And believe in whatever may lie
In those things that money can buy
Thought true love could have been a contender
Are you there?
Say a prayer for the Pretender.
Who started out so young and strong
Only to surrender.

Say a prayer for the pretender
Are you there for the pretender?
Say a prayer for the pretender

Are you there for the pretender?
Are you prepared for the pretender?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jackson Browne and David Lindley's song Pretender explore the disillusionment and struggle for identity in modern society. The opening verse describes the mundane routine of renting a house, going to work, and coming home exhausted, only to repeat it all again the next day. The repetition of "Amen" adds a sense of resignation that this is the way life is supposed to be. The following verse questions the societal changes that were anticipated for love and progress, but were they just "fitful dreams" and not a greater awakening? Browne reflects on the ephemeral quality of life, that in the end, it all goes by in the "wink of an eye," but still we do it all again the next day.

The next stanza contrasts the desire for love and personal fulfillment with the necessity to work for money. The sirens' call, church bells, and junk man's musings all represent the distractions and obstacles that we must navigate in society. The veterans' struggle and the children's anticipation highlight the many different stages and obstacles one faces during life. The Pretender strolls through it all, trying to find himself in a world that doesn't seem to care. The final verse meditates on the lovers who run through the night and the dreamers whose ships sail away from sight. Browne acknowledges his desire for love and connection and hopes to "fill in the missing colors" with a partner who shares similar dreams. However, the constant bombardment of advertisements and avarice leads to the ultimate surrender: "Are you there for the Pretender? Say a prayer for the Pretender. Who started out so young and strong, only to surrender."

I didn't make it to the Festival that year. I had moved on from radio, and long ago, Gene had moved over to public radio, where I was no longer needed as a producer and engineer. Those were good days at MMR and IOQ. I was young..... and so was Gene! At this time, 2006 is 12 years in the rear view mirror, and Jackson's appearances at The Main Point are even farther behind us. These songs remind me so much of that happy, more innocent age. Thank you for posting.

@Clyde JB Music Fan. If you only listen to the two of them without looking , which can be a distraction, you can realize that this is as good as it gets. The two of them together equal pure genius .
Really. They were both like aged wine, sip by sip. But don’t ruin it by looking at the dregs at the bottom of the bottle. They both look a little funny, not like the songs they perform. Lindley looks like one of of the seven dwarfs but I’m not sure which one. Jackson looks like he’s in prison pants from long ago ; but if you close your eyes and just listen, it doesn’t get any better.
