Linda Paloma
Jackson Browne & Warren Zevon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

At the moment the music began
And you heard the guitar player starting to sing
You were filled with the beauty that ran
Through what you were imagining

Dreaming of scenes from those songs of love
I was the endless sky
And you were my Mexican dove

Now the music that played in your ears
Grows a little bit fainter each day
And you find yourself looking through tears
At the love you feel slipping away

Though it's not the kind
Of love you might hope to find
If tears could release the heart
From the shadows preferred by the mind

Like a wind that comes up in the night
Caressing your face while you sleep
Love will fill your eyes with the sight
Of a world you can't hope to keep

Dreaming on after that moment's gone
The light in your lover's eyes
Disappears with the light of the dawn

But the morning brings
Strength to your restless wings
And some other lover sings
To the sun's bright corona

I know all about these things
Linda Paloma

Fly away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jackson Browne's song Linda Paloma explore the theme of love and its fleeting nature. The song describes the moment when love first blossoms, between a man and a woman, at a music performance. The man, who is singing the song, reminisces about how he and the woman were united in their love of the music and their shared dreams of love. However, the passage of time has eroded their love, and the woman now finds herself shedding tears, staring at what she thought was a love slipping away.

The lyrics imply that the love that the couple shared was not the kind that leads to lifelong commitment and happiness, but rather a transient experience that fades away like music. The man's advice to the woman, who he calls Linda Paloma, is to fly away and move on towards someone new who might make her heart sing once again. The song suggests that while love may be intense and powerful like a wind in the night, it is also bound to dissipate and disappear like the light of the dawn.

Very nice, but I love the version on which he acompanies himself with the piano, it gives the song a whole different feel. If anyone has it they might put it on ?
