Stones
James Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Thank you love
For all of the ways that you fucked me up
When will I ever thank you enough?
Oh for the tears that toughed
You dragged me down so I learned to stand up
(Thank you love)
Can't even hold her hand
'Cause castles all fall into sand
Leaving this world to the damned
(Damn)
I never wanted to write you that letter
I still keep your photo locked up in my dresser
Saw from my eyes on the day I met her
I'm dying
I push you away
Then I wonder why you won't stay
It's so obvious to anyone else
And I can't catch a break
But it's funny 'cause I can't blame
Anybody but my own fucking self
Day after day I waste
Keeping this pain away
Thinking I'm good on my own
I make this mistake
Until my heart turns gray
And I'm left with this heart of stone
So we'll break up
'Cause I never wanted to take love
And change me to we and I to us
Chose to suffer so selfish
And I know
I say I'm better alone
So you'll let me go
How hollow
How low
I knew on the day that I gave you my sweater
I'd make you escape from my frozen weather
Least you're warm now that we're not together
Stop crying
I push you away
Then I wonder why you won't stay
It's so obvious to anyone else
And I can't catch a break
But it's funny 'cause I can't blame
Anybody but my own fucking self
Day after day I waste
Keeping this pain away
Thinking I'm good on my own
I make this mistake

Until my heart turns gray
And I'm left with this heart of stone

Overall Meaning

In the song "Stones", James conveys his desire for affection and appreciation while he is still alive. He prays that those around him do not wait until it is too late, and that they give him the appreciation he needs today instead of waiting until he is deceased. In the second verse, James talks about his significant other, explaining how he is willing to do everything for her, and that she is the perfect woman for him. He talks about how he dodges other women like Matrix bullets and emphasizes that he cannot take chances of losing her. He also mentions that he cannot take risks because he had a child at the age of eighteen, and he cannot gamble with his life.

The chorus in the song emphasizes James’ desire to be appreciated before it is too late. The line "set in stone like that shit engraved, girl" emphasizes the importance of giving someone their flowers while they are still alive. Likewise, the line "I need my flowers today, not when I'm in a grave" exemplifies James’ desire for instant gratification for his work, rather than waiting until he is no longer around to enjoy it. Overall, the song "Stones" is a reminder to appreciate people while they are still around and to show love and respect to those closest to us.

We used to have this chunk of crystal that was brought back from S Africa in the 1930s when my grandfather worked in the Diamond mines as an engineer

He told his family he was given the gem by his boss before he left to return back to Britain.
No one believed it was real as it was in the raw state, uncut but he swore it was a real diamond

However as i remember it was a sizable piece, about the size of a small walnut but i did see it when i was young

Incredibly the crystal was kept in a button box & viewed as an oddity!
No one knows what happened to it after my grandmother died
& no one actually looked for it

After studying minerology i believe the stone was real, as to what standard i dont know but i think the gem would have been worth alot of money!

A walnut sized diamond..???
Could have been worth a fortune
No one in my dads family knew what happened to it & no one suddenly came into money either

It makes me itch with what it could have been worth & wished id asked my grandmother if i could have it & knowing her she would have agreed !

Wow, if id had it & knowing my predilection for keeping stones & pebbles etc id have been able to verify if the stone was genuine & its quality
Not for material gain for myself but to have been able to divide up the proceeds ( if any) to the rest of my grandads family, who while not poor finacially but had to watch the pennies

Alas i'll never know, i expect the button box was given away or literally thrown away !!

Btw, my maternal grandmothers engagement ring held 3 large Ceylon rubies & i remember them as quite a light but very vibrant pink not red!
My grandad got the rubies from a friend who had worked in India in the early 1900s

My mother said he paid alot of money way back then!
A ring was commissioned with 6 smaller diamonds & the 3 rubies
It was beautiful

Sadly ( again) my grandmother was in a hospital in her latter stages of life & my mum asked her where her jewellery was kept as the hospital admin advised family of resident patients to take their jewellery to keep safe as the patients keep losing pieces in the gardens etc

All my grans jewellery was there but not her ruby ring, after much searching they found one ruby stone in the U bend in her rooms sink & nothing else so again it was lost!

But i did inherit my grans Ceylon
( female) sapphire which is almost as large as Princess Dianas engagement ring!

Its worth a heck of alot of money but id not part with it!
After my death its going into a bank deposit box with certain instructions as im not sure at this stage id trust my daughters in selling it!

Anyway sorry this has been long but thought it may be of interest
Thank you for this lovely video

Most of those opals you showed were not fire opals. Fire Opals are mainly orange red or yellow. You showed a lot of different opals such as boulder opal, precious opal, crystal opal, white opal. Black opal should be on this list, because it's certainly a lot more expensive than the 'fake' Herkimer diamonds, that are really quartz crystal, not diamonds at all.

Nick Howard

Naw they could be fire opals could be a welo or Honduran but boulder opals which are native to Australia can have different colors but aren't given the fire opal name like the welos from Ethiopia are for example..and Herkimers are Herkimers they aren't a diamond correct but they aren't just a quartz either
