So Beautiful
James Morrison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Seventeen, way too young for love
But I couldn′t think of nothing else
I got mine, I never gave anything away
I was just thinking of myself

All the times you said you'd love me
I never gave you my reply
Had a dream it was over
And I woke up with a pain inside
And I didn′t tell you and I don't know why, why, why

'Cause you′re so beautiful, so beautiful, so beautiful to me
And you′re everything that I'd ever need
It was a shame I couldn′t see
And now that I've told you
I feel so free
′Cause you're so beautiful to me

Times moved on, I′m much older
I guess I've learned from my mistakes
For the first time
I think I know who I am
And I'm sorry that I made you mad, baby

′Cause you′re so beautiful, so beautiful, so beautiful to me
And you're everything that I′d ever need
It was a shame I couldn't see
And now that I′ve told you
I feel so free
'Cause you′re so beautiful, so beautiful to me

And if you leave me now, I won't be surprised
If you stay, well, I'll no longer hide

′Cause you′re so beautiful, so beautiful, so beautiful to me
And you're everything that I′d ever need
It was a shame I couldn't see
And now that I′ve told you
I feel so free
'Cause you′re so beautiful
You're so, so beautiful to me

To me
To me
To me
To me

To me
To me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of James Morrison's song "So Beautiful" depict a story of growth, realization, and regret. The singer reflects on a past relationship that began when they were young, admitting that they were too immature to truly understand and appreciate love. The lyric "Seventeen, way too young for love, but I couldn't think of nothing else" highlights their misguided focus on themselves and their own desires.

Throughout the relationship, the singer acknowledges that they failed to reciprocate their partner's love and affection. They admit to disregarding their partner's expressions of love, as shown in the line "All the times you said you'd love me, I never gave you my reply." This lack of response stems from a dream they had, where they envisioned the relationship ending, and they woke up feeling pain. Instead of communicating their fears and emotions, they kept it to themselves.

As time progresses, the singer matures and learns from their mistakes. They express regret for their past actions and acknowledge that they now understand who they are as a person. This growth is symbolized by the line "For the first time, I think I know who I am." The singer recognizes their part in making their partner mad and apologizes sincerely.

The refrain of "you're so beautiful, so beautiful, so beautiful to me" expresses the admiration and love the singer now holds for their partner. They realize they were blind to their partner's beauty and everything they represented. By sharing their feelings openly, the singer feels a sense of liberation and freedom.

In the final verse, the singer signifies their acceptance of any outcome regarding the relationship. Whether their partner decides to leave or stay, the singer will no longer hide from their emotions. They have come to appreciate their partner's beauty and recognize their worth.

Overall, "So Beautiful" illustrates a journey from youthful selfishness and emotional immaturity to self-awareness, regret, and growth. It portrays the power of introspection, learning from mistakes, and appreciating the beauty within others.

Really can't understand how James is not right up on top of the ladder.he's so underrated his vocals are incredible.

@aziara369

Maybe because he doesnt know how to twerk. You probably know what im tryna say here

@fduncan3662

I completely agree, he is by far the best British Male vocalist that's out there and every time he releases a new album, it's always better than the last! His sound and music are maturing just as he is. However, I mean this with the greatest respect, its maybe a good thing that hes not 'top of the pops' as such, because he hasn't sold himself or his sound to what those in the big record labels want him to write or release. All his music is his own and organic. #onelovejames

@internalbleeding2373

he's so underrated. Such a lovely voice..

@hi.ayusita

right? his voice always left me speechless like holy shit man

@corsinivideos

Hes not underrated though, was a huge star in the 2000s its just hes older now, all artists have a peak then remain to have a solid following just aren't at the peak of their fame anymore. Also maisnstrem music has changed a lot and his style of music isn't trending/charting much at the moment either.
