The Only Night

And I was a victim
Of her killer smile
Her love was cheap
And it was great for a little while
I had to leave
But she wanted me stay
And she ripped up my shirt
I couldn't take it no more
I couldn't spend another night alone
I couldn't take it no more
[Chorus]
If this is where we ended up
Then I refuse to be so hard on myself this time
If everything I have is gone
Then what is wrong
In spending time with you
I'll keep you warm
You'll hold me tight
This might be our only night
I can't give up
No no no no, oh
I tried to reconcile
But it never made a difference
You could cut the atmosphere with a knife
It was so tense and cold
And every time I tried to get little closer to you
You got further and further away from me
Until you faded into the distance
Yes you did
There was nothing I could do
[Chorus]
I'll keep you warm
When you hold me tight
Cause this might be our only night
This might be the only night
I can't spend another night alone
If this is where we ended up
Then I refuse to be so hard on myself this time
If everything I have is gone
Then what is wrong
In spending time with you
[Chorus]
Keep me warm and I hold you tight
Cause this might be our only night
The James Morrison song “The Only Night” is about a man who has faced heartbreak but is trying to move forward by finding comfort in another person. The track begins with the singer reminiscing about a past love that was destructive and cheap. He left this woman but she continued to try and keep him; ultimately, she left her mark on him with disdain. The chorus is a moment of self-reflection and reconciliation with the fact that things are not going as planned; the singer is okay with it. He admits that this person may be his only chance at a happy ever after, and he doesn't want to be hard on himself for trying to find solace in another. However, the second verse is a reflection of the past relationship in a negative light. The singer confesses to having been trying to win back his former love but doesn't succeed. The other person is distant, and the atmosphere between them is cold and tense. The final chorus of the song expresses the importance of the current moment and how it may be the only shot they have at happiness.
Overall, “The Only Night” is a song about healing and finding love after heartbreak. Its simple melody and honest lyrics can resonate with anyone who has gone through an experience of being let down in a relationship or a situation. What the singer is trying to say is that it's okay to let go of the things that don't work out for our happiness, and it's okay to find a haven in another person.

And every time I tried to get little closer to you
Whenever I attempted to connect with you
You got further and further away from me
You distanced yourself from me even more
Until you faded into the distance
Until you were completely out of my reach
This might be the only night

Keep me warm and I hold you tight
We'll comfort each other and be close
