You
James Taylor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You and I again, these days go by
And I wish that I could slow the whole thing down
And have it back again, just one more time
Then again, maybe we can, 'cause I can't escape this feeling
That we've been this way together, you and I

There you are again, I climbed so high
High enough to finally see your sign
Shining in the distance
You were tending your own fire
We were biding our time
We were both waiting for the moment
When our paths would come together, you and I

I see how fierce you are
Whenever the world would drag us down
How serious you are
Standing on holy ground

And so although I know we're only small
In the time we have here
Surely, we have it all

I see how fierce you are
Whenever this world would drag us down
How serious you are
Standing on holy ground

And so although I know we're only small
In the time we have here

This time we got it all
You and I again

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of James Taylor's "You" describe the feeling of being near someone special and the sensations it brings. The song is a love ballad that expresses the feeling of being in love and being near the person that makes everything feel better. The singer explains how it is not the pale moon that excites or thrills him, but the nearness of his loved one. He goes on to say that it is not the sweet conversation that brings him the sensation, but simply being near the person he loves.

The chorus describes the feeling the singer gets when he is holding the person he loves, all of his wildest dreams come true. He doesn't need any soft lights or special settings to enchant him, he only needs to feel the nearness of his loved one. The singer asks for the right to hold his lover close and to feel their nearness in the night. This song expresses the power of being near the person you love and the joy it brings.

When you're down and troubled
And you need some lovin' care
And nothin', nothin' is goin' right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night
You just call out my name
And you know, wherever I am
I'll come runnin'
To see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a friend
If the sky above you
Grows dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind begins to blow
Keep your head together
And call my name out loud
Soon you'll hear me knockin' at your door
You just call out my name
And you know, wherever I am
I'll come runnin', runnin', yeah, yeah
To see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there, yes, I will
Now, ain't it good to know that you've got a friend
When people can be so cold?
They'll hurt you, yes, and desert you
And take your soul if you let them
Oh, but don't you let them
You just call out my name
And you know, wherever I am
I'll come runnin', runnin', yeah, yeah
To see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there, yes, I will
You've got a friend
You've got a friend
Ain't it good to know you've got a friend
Ain't it good to know, ain't it good to know
Ain't it good to know
You've got a friend
Oh, yeah, now, you've got a friend
Yeah baby, you've got a friend
Oh, yeah, you've got a friend

My dad was in the emergency room before he went to the ICU. I played this song on my phone and put one ear bud in his ear and the other in mine. He had a stroke and could no longer communicate and I held his hand and cried while the song played. My dad showed me this song and it will always be our song.

I think of this song often. I’m a veteran and wasn’t dealing well with PTSD (didn’t know I had it at the time), I had a buddy who talked me out of suck-starting a shotgun, just simply by being there for me. He didn’t know what I was considering, but by simply telling me that people cared about me made all the difference. Thanks Steve for being my friend, I owe my life to you.

@Mr1967mejias

Praying for you. I also didn’t realize that I had PTSD. I chalked it up to just having a short fuse. The Army changed me. I’ve battled depression and anxiety. I learn to cope with it by being an ENCOURAGER to others, every day. Seeing them smile is my medicine, of choice. #PTSDisReal.
