You've Got a Friend
James Taylor Lyrics

When you're down and troubled
And you need a helping hand
And nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running, oh yeah baby, to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you've got to do is call
And I'll be there, ye, ye, ye
You've got a friend

If the sky above you
Should turn dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind should begin to blow
Keep you head together
And call my name out loud now
Soon you'll hear me knocking at you door

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running, oh yes I will, to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall, ye
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there, ye, ye, yeah

Ain't it good to know that you've got a friend
When people can be so cold
They'll hurt you, and desert you
And take your soul if you let them, oh yeah, don't you let 'em now

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again, oh baby, don't you know
Winter, spring, summer or fall
Hey now, all you have to do is call
And I'll be there, yes I will
You've got a friend
You've got a friend, yeah

Ain't it good to know you've got a friend
Ain't it good to know you've got a friend

Oh, ye yeah, you've got a friend

I heard this song a week ago and every hair stood up on my neck. I was instantly transported back to my 9 year old self. It’s bedtime and I’m huddled amongst some old musty smelling cream wool blankets , I’m alone in a pitch black room. There’s a creaking around me and a whistle of wind coming in through the cracked rickety window. Theres a scratching noise behind the skirting boards. Usually scary but insignificant now compared to the excruciating throbbing pain in my heart that keeps taking my breath away. My whole body ached like never before. I need my daddy to pick me up and hug me . I need to snuggle against him while smelling his soft warm jumper. I need to push my face into his to kiss him and for him to kiss me right back even with just stubbly chin The nuns at my school had said miracles exist. So I prayed while I sobbed for God to return my daddy back to me or to take me to him. I knew he wouldn’t leave me without a goodbye .I screamed into the pillow covering it with tears, mucus and spit . My jaw hurt so badly. I wept until my head felt like it would explode. I needed my daddy more than anything in the world. I knew he’d come back , he just wouldn’t leave me .. he would send me a message I wasn’t sure how. I hid under the blankets scared a monster would come . Under my pillow was an old tranny radio. Battered and old with a dial to try to find a station . My mother had told me if I listened to it at night the a policeman would come and shout at me and we would get into trouble. . So I’d hidden it well. Under the covers I’d try to tune it in . The reception was iffy , muffled voices and crackles over music , voices came and went I was hoping my dad might talk to me through the little old radio . His voice might just come if I listened intently .
The pain in my heart battered and bruised me. I wondered if it was possible to die under my blankets and God lift me up through the world to my daddy. As I turned the nob on the battered paint stained radio suddenly this song came on and spoke to my pain . The words entered my mind and my broken heart. They soothed something in me as the ends of my fingers chewed broken nails throbbed to the music . The words in the song told me my daddy was always with me . He was still here he was my friend I just couldn’t see him.
It’s impossible to convey how much this song comforted and spoke directly to me. Talking about my dad’s death was not an option at that time . I was left to find my own way to process the pain.
James Taylor I thank you so very much for offering something to me to hold on to.

I'm a Christian, years ago when I was going through a dark period in my life I happened to be walking through a store and this song was playing, to me it was Jesus reaching out to me through this song telling me everything was going to be ok

Intoxicating in a good. Or godly way

@bizbizley

It won’t be the last dark moment…. Jesus did say ‘whenever two or three gather in my name…’
This must refer to that surely…. I’m not a believer but it makes sense…

It was the summer of 1973, I had just graduated from High School the year before. I meet an old class mate. Her name was Carol Claspe.... I fell in love with her, head over heals in love. She helped me and I helped her grow up and live a life free from the family nest. She didn't love me though. But I was blind, to much in love to see it, I guess. She was in love with another guy, Paul, much more mature than me. When she let me know that ,it broke my heart. I mean I was really broken up. This song was what I wanted to say to her when it ended. We both listened to James Taylor. I always think of her when I hear this and it brings up that time of love for her. She will never know how much I loved her. Life was being so unfair right off the bat. Well, the guy she loved ( Paul) was a Christian and he actually helped to open my eyes to desire to know the Love of Jesus because I saw 'love' in him. Plus the other bands and artist of that time, who spoke of Christ and His Love, made me wonder about God. Well, I took this broken heart and was seeking for Jesus in my bedroom, reading the gospels, when He opened the scriptures up to me, in a supernatural way. That was an experience! He made the word come alive with meaning and I wanted Him to be my Lord and Savior. Really though, He was pursuing me. I was filled with like Liquid love and peace, filled with God! That was a major experience! The sky was so blue and the earth was so beautiful, everyday was filled with Gods love and Presence inside me! I was so radically changed into a new person, a new creation. I'll never forget how Carol was part of that and how This song marks the time of that Happening. Jesus really is real. More real now, than He ever was to me. I hope someone else Falls in Love with Him and gets their heart healed. He's in that business, Let Him. Jesus lover, Bob R. PS...If I saw Carol now, I would still love her, in a certain way godly of course. It would be so good for her to know all that happened because she played a part in it, it was good that she broke my heart... ( maybe she'll read this and find out),,, She's got a friend... All you need is Jesus' love!!! He is true Love and Peace and so much more... BTW, God blessed me with His Choice for a wife who I love so much.. PTL.. God is Good! I hope Carol is saved and right with the Lord Jesus. ( I just had a beautiful dream of her. I was leaving my house and friends were giving me their last good byes. Carol came up to me fast and gave me a kiss in a very unique way, showing, telling ,expressing her affections for me. Our lips never touched though. She just ran her fingers around her mouth as she kissed me with expression and thought. It was so real though. Like it happened. This happened 12/11/2019 and I just woke up from that and had to find this post ,just in case she reads it. I hope she is saved. Heaven would be so much better with her there. It's been 40 plus years since I have seen her. Life's journey is coming to a close. God used her to open up my heart to Him. She broke it and He healed it. She was my first love. Now Jesus is, Bob R.
