Fire and Rain
James Taylor & Carole King Lyrics

Just yesterday mornin', they let me know you were gone
Suzanne the plans they made put an end to you
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song
I just can't remember who to send it to

I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again

Won't you look down upon me, Jesus
You've got to help me make a stand
You've just got to see me through another day
My body's aching and my time is at hand
I won't make it any other way

I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again

Been walking my mind to an easy time, my back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows, it'll turn your head around
Well there's hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things to come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground

I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you baby, one more time again, now

Thought I'd see you one more time again
There's just a few things coming my way this time around now
Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you, fire and rain now
Na na na. Na na na na na na na na na na. Na na na na na na na na

Overall Meaning

"Fire and Rain" is a song by James Taylor & Carole King. In the first verse, the lyrics describe the moment when the singer finds out that someone named Suzanne has died - she possibly committed suicide. He then begins reflecting on his life and the experiences he has had. This leads him to think about his own mortality and he asks for help from Jesus to guide him through whatever difficulties he may face in life. The second verse talks about reminiscing on a simpler time in life when things were easygoing and carefree. However, the present is nothing like that. He sings about the harsh realities of life, particularly the loneliness that can come with it.

The chorus talks about the different experiences he has gone through, both good and bad - from seeing fire and rain to experiencing sunny days and loneliness. Despite all of this, he always held onto the belief that he would see his loved one again. The song ends with the singer saying goodbye to his loved one, acknowledging that he will not see her again, but still holds onto the hope that he will see her in the afterlife.
