Blaming Something
Jamie Lidell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I tried blaming Berlin for my loneliness
I tried blaming New York for my emptiness
Blaming this house
for my lack of passion
Blaming this town
for my backward fashion
It’s the same mistake that I made, I make
It’s the same mistake that I make, that I made
Always blaming something
Always blaming something
Goes on and on and on and on and on

[Chorus:]
And it's all coming back to me
This time I should be taking responsibility
For the choices I've been making
There’s always a price to pay
For all that running away
And I don’t wanna be a victim no more

I tried blaming the rain for those cold memories
I tried blaming the sky cause I fall back down
Tried blaming the stars for blinding my eyes
Keep Trieding to blame the sun cause I burn, burn, burn

Oh, daddy, you’re the one to blame

It’s the same mistake that I made, I make
It’s the same mistake that I make, that I made
Always blaming something
Always blaming something
Goes on and on and on and on and on

[Chorus]

Tried blaming money for making me hungry
Tried blaming the road(?) for the temptation
Tried blaming the train for pulling out of the station
Tried blaming my clothes for making me cold
Daddy, you’re the one to blame

Blaming something

[Chorus]

No more, no more
Always blaming something, blaming something, blaming something, blaming something

(Blaming something)
Always blaming something (repeated)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jamie Lidell's song "Blaming Something" express a recurring pattern of blaming external factors for one's problems, rather than taking responsibility for one's choices and actions. The singer tries to blame various things - cities, towns, weather, fashion, money, even the sun - for their loneliness, emptiness, lack of passion, and hunger. However, they realize that this is the same mistake they always make, and that they have to stop being a victim and start owning their decisions. The chorus repeats the message that the singer needs to take responsibility for their life and stop running away from themselves.

The song can be interpreted as a reflection on the human tendency to avoid accountability and seek scapegoats for our troubles. By blaming external circumstances or other people, we avoid the discomfort of acknowledging our own role in shaping our fate. However, this avoidance also prevents us from growing and learning from our mistakes, as we keep repeating the same patterns. The song encourages the listener to break this cycle by facing their fears and weaknesses, rather than blaming them on something else.

I walked past this nondescript CD in HMV, only noticing the interesting artwork and that it was on Warp. Wasn't until I was browsing the Juno charts that I came across this. I really like this. Reminds me of both Prince and Les Rythmes Digitales
