The band made their debut under Acid Jazz Records but subsequently found mainstream success under Sony. While under this label, three of their albums have charted at number one in the UK, including Emergency on Planet Earth (1993), Synkronized (1999) and A Funk Odyssey (2001). The band's 1998 single, "Deeper Underground", was also number one in their native country.
As of 2017, Jamiroquai had sold more than 26 million albums worldwide. Their third album, Travelling Without Moving (1996), received a Guinness World Record as the best-selling funk album in history. The music video for its lead single, "Virtual Insanity", also contributed to the band's success. The song was named Video of the Year at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards and earned the band a Grammy Award in 1998.

Drifting Along
Jamiroquai Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But I'll still be cruising
I live this life long
Long long time
You know I'm drifting along (drifting along)
Can't see where I'm going
I will get to my destination
I' m feeling the pressure (pressure)
But I won't be put down this time
I'm shifting along
Though I sing a sweet song (sweet song)
We'll murder in the streets where I be livin'
I'm closing my eyes (closing my eyes)
Don't want to see killin'
Gentle giants will roam forever
I'm cruising the street
Wondering who I will meet
Oh love has got to reign in our world
La la la la
La la la la la
I don't know where I am going to
(I don't know where I am going to)
La la la la
La la la la la
I don't know where I am going to
Drifting along
Drifting along
Closing up my ears to the sound
I don't want to hear, crying
The lyrics to “Drifting Along” speak to an individual in a state of limbo, uncertain of their ultimate destination but embracing the journey of life nonetheless. The opening line “nowhere to go but I’ll still be cruising” suggests that the singer may not have a clear path or direction, but they are still determined to keep moving forward. The repetition of “drifting along” reinforces the idea that they are floating through life without a clear destination in mind. The line “can't see where I'm going, I will get to my destination” acknowledges the singer’s uncertainty while also expressing confidence that they will eventually reach their destination.
The next stanza introduces a sense of pressure and chaos with “all around me crumble” and “we’ll murder in the streets where I be livin’”. Despite these harsh realities, the singer is determined to remain resilient and not be “put down” by what is happening around them. The idea of “shifting along” suggests that the singer is adapting and changing with their surroundings, potentially searching for new opportunities or perspectives.
The final stanza brings a sense of hope and love with the line “Oh love has got to reign in our world”. The use of the phrase “gentle giants” conjures an image of strength and kindness, reinforcing the idea that love and compassion can reign in even the most trying of circumstances. The repetition of “I don’t know where I am going to” and “drifting along” as the song comes to a close suggests that the journey is ongoing, but the singer remains determined to keep moving forward with an open heart.
