Born Janis Eddy Fink on 7th April 1951 to a Jewish family in New York City, she was primarily raised in New Jersey, initially on a farm, and attended East Orange High School and the New York City High School of Music & Art. Her parents, Victor (a music teacher) and Pearl, ran a summer camp in upstate New York, and, in that Cold War era, were frequently under government surveillance because of their left-wing politics. (Ian alluded to these years later in her song "God and the FBI"). Young Janis admired the work of folk pioneers such as Joan Baez and Odetta. At the age of twelve, Ian wrote her first song, "Hair of Spun Gold", which was subsequently published in the folk publication Broadside and was later recorded for her debut album.
At the age of thirteen she legally changed her name to Janis Ian, using as her new last name her brother Eric's middle name. Also in that year, Ian wrote and sang her first hit single, "Society's Child (Baby I've Been Thinking)", about an interracial romance forbidden by a girl's mother and frowned upon by her peers and teachers; the girl ultimately decides to end the relationship, claiming the social norms of the day have left her no other choice. Produced by George "Shadow" Morton and released three times between 1965 and 1967, "Society's Child" finally became a national hit on its third release, after Leonard Bernstein featured it in a television special: Inside Pop: The Rock Revolution. The song's content was taboo for some radio stations, and they withdrew or banned it from their playlists; in her 2008 autobiography Society's Child, Ian recalls receiving hate mail and death threats as a response to the song, and mentions that a radio station in Atlanta that played it was burned down. In the summer of 1967, "Society's Child" reached number fourteen on the Billboard Hot 100.
Her most successful single in the United States was "At Seventeen", released in 1975, a bittersweet commentary on adolescent cruelty, the illusion of popularity, and teenage angst, as reflected upon from the perspective of a twenty-four-year-old. It reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Adult Contemporary chart. It won the 1975 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance - Female. The song's album, Between the Lines, reached number one on Billboard's Album chart. It was quickly certified gold, and later earned a platinum certification for sales of over a million copies sold in the U.S.
Ian finally became one of the first "indie artists", resurfacing in 1993, with the worldwide release of Breaking Silence and its title song about incest. She also came out as a lesbian with that release. Her most recent album, Folk Is the New Black, was released in 2006; it is the first in over twenty years for which she did all the songwriting herself.
Between The Lines
Janis Ian Lyrics

Between the moments of our games and repartee
There's never much to read
Between the lines of what we need and what we'll take
There's never much to talk about or say aloud
But say it anyway
Of holidays and yesterdays, and broken dreams
That somehow slipped away
While you are being
Before and after photographs
Teach how to pass from reaching to believing
We live beyond our means on other people's dreams
And that's succeeding
Between the lines of photographs I've seen the past
It isn't pleasing
So strike another match
We'll have another cup of wine
And dance until the evening's dead
Of too much song and time
There's never much to talk about
Or read between the lines
Of what we dream about
When we're apart
And no one's looking on
To say you're mine
It was a good year then, it was a good year then
We all remember
The time you threw the looking glass and seemed a fool
Or very clever
Don't spoil it all, I can't recall a time
When you were struck without an answer
We'll live a quiet peaceful time between the lines
And go together
And I'm striking up the band to play our last hurrah
We'll dance until we've killed another evening off
Don't think of anyone but me
I'll have no lovers on the side
Tonight is all we've ever dreamed about
For once let's get it right
We'll go down flying in the end
Through another bottle in between the lines
I'll go down like a ship of state
Let's be gracious now
Between the lines
The song "Between the Lines" by Janis Ian explores the unspoken thoughts and emotions that exist between two people who are playing games and engaging in witty repartee. The singer of the song highlights the lack of communication between these two individuals, and how their desires and dreams remain hidden beneath the surface. Despite this, the singer encourages the two individuals to express themselves honestly, regardless of how painful or difficult it may be. The song touches on the themes of lost dreams and broken promises, as well as the human tendency to live beyond our means and to measure ourselves against the expectations of others.
As the song progresses, the singer reflects on memories of the past and how they often fail to live up to our expectations. Yet, there is a sense of nostalgia and longing for what once was, as well as a desire to hold onto the present moment and make the most of it. The final verse speaks to the urgency of living life to the fullest and seizing the moment, without worrying about what others may think. The band strikes up one last hurrah, and the singer urges the listener to forget their worries and enjoy the music and dance, without any regrets or reservations.
Line by Line Meaning
There's never much to say
There's nothing truly significant to communicate
Between the moments of our games and repartee
During the times we're interacting and joking around
There's never much to read
There's little that's truly expressive
Between the lines of what we need and what we'll take
In what we want and what we actually do
There's never much to talk about or say aloud
There's not much worth discussing or expressing verbally
But say it anyway
But still express it regardless of its significance
Of holidays and yesterdays, and broken dreams
Of past experiences and failed aspirations
That somehow slipped away
That we lost unexpectedly
In books and magazines on how to be and what to see
In published materials that dictate ideal behaviors and standards of living
While you are being
While you're alive and present
Before and after photographs
Images depicting how things were before and after a certain time
Teach how to pass from reaching to believing
Teach how to go from hoping and aiming to having faith in something
We live beyond our means on other people's dreams
We live extravagantly using borrowed ideals and aspirations
And that's succeeding
And that's considered to be successful
Between the lines of photographs I've seen the past
By examining pictures I've come across the past
It isn't pleasing
It's not exactly pleasant
So strike another match
Let's light another match to set the mood
We'll have another cup of wine
Let's share another glass of wine
And dance until the evening's dead
And dance until the night ends
Of too much song and time
Of too much music and time spent together
There's never much to talk about
Nothing too significant worth discussing
Or read between the lines
Or to interpret beyond the surface level of our communication
Of what we dream about
Of what we desire
When we're apart
When we're separated from one another
And no one's looking on
Without anyone else watching us
To say you're mine
To validate our relationship to others
It was a good year then, it was a good year then
That year we had was good, it was good
We all remember
We all recall that period
The time you threw the looking glass and seemed a fool
The time you threw the mirror out and seemed foolish
Or very clever
Or quite intelligent
Don't spoil it all, I can't recall a time
Don't ruin everything, I can't remember a time
When you were struck without an answer
When you were stumped and had no reply
We'll live a quiet peaceful time between the lines
We'll live a peaceful and harmonious lifestyle without external pressure
And go together
And do it together
And I'm striking up the band to play our last hurrah
I'm gathering the band to play our ultimate celebration
We'll dance until we've killed another evening off
We'll dance until we've used up all the time in the night
Don't think of anyone but me
Do not entertain thoughts of anyone apart from me
I'll have no lovers on the side
I won't cheat on you with someone else
Tonight is all we've ever dreamed about
Tonight, everything we've ever desired could happen
For once let's get it right
Let's make everything perfect for once
We'll go down flying in the end
We'll ultimately fall, but with grandeur
Through another bottle in between the lines
Amidst conversing and socializing, we'll drink another bottle
I'll go down like a ship of state
I'll leave this world with a sense of dignified purpose
Let's be gracious now
Let's show gratitude and fairness in all our actions
Between the lines
In the space where things are not directly stated

I am currently unearthing every song of Janis's that is on YouTube, each one from every album I had as a teen. I love how I can recall all the lyrics and inflections like I just played them yesterday - some last heard over 35 years ago. Shows how much she is etched into my psyche. I LOVE it.

Her voice is amazing. I remember playing this album until I wore holes in the grooves. Thanks for uploading and letting re-live my teens.

This particular track I played so often I wound up with an unfixable skip - that took out about one full line of lyric near the end of it. I got used to singing the "skipped/edited" version with the song, once I found it again on YouTube, I had to relearn it. 😁

Thanks for posting this. What a wonderful and powerful album. One of my faves when I was in High School. Every song has meaning.
