Zauner released a tape in June 2013 under the solo moniker Japanese Breakfast. The tape was titled June and boasted thirty tracks written and recorded every day of the month. A stark deviation from Little Big League's guitar-based indie rock, it showcased Zauner's dark lyrics, unique vocals and inherent knack for pop melody.
Ā
Two bedroom pop cassettes later, Japanese Breakfast returns with a first full-fledged LP and vinyl release, Psychopomp. The album explores Zauner's experimental interests and hosts a wide range of sound: jarring anime samples, minimalist ballads, rhythms and synths reminiscent of Tango in the Night-era Fleetwood Mac paired with the moody intimacy of Mount Eerie. Psychopomp revisits and revamps lo-fi tracks and adds chilling new songs to fall in love with.
In 2019, Japanese Breakfast released two singles under the W Hotels music label, "Essentially" and a cover of the Tears for Fears song, Head Over Heels.
In 2021, Zauner returns, having released three singles to her upcoming album, Jubilee, which will be out on the 4th of June. The singles are Be Sweet, Posing in Bondage, and Savage Good Boy; they were released in this order.

She just paces 'round all day
She's sniffin' at your empty room
I'm tryin' to believe
When I sleep, it's really you
Visiting my dreams
Like they say that angels do
Now I leave here as an empty fucking hole
Oh, do you believe in heaven?
Like you believed in me
Oh, it could be such heaven
If you believed it was real
Is there something you can do with yourself?
As I sift through the debris
While I empty every shelf
And flounder in the muck
I'll be drowning in so soon
You can't watch me from the banks then
Turn to say you're swimming too
Come here for the long haul
Now I leave here just an empty goddamn hole
How do you believe in heaven?
Like you believe in me?
Oh, it could be such heaven
If you believed it was real
How, how, how
How
How, how, how
How
How, how, how
How
How, how, how
The song "In Heaven" by Japanese Breakfast is a poignant tribute to a loved one, who has passed away. The singer speaks of her sadness and confusion at the loss of her beloved and how her dog seems to be lost without the presence of her loved one. She struggles to cope with the aftermath of the loss and wonders how she can move on. She hopes that her loved one is now in heaven and wishes that she could believe in the afterlife as strongly as she believes in the existence of her deceased partner. As she deals with the grief and emptiness, she wonders whether her loved one still watches over her in some way.
The lyrics of the song reveal a deep sense of loss and heartache felt by the singer. The use of metaphors like 'pacing dog' and 'empty goddamn hole' portrays the emptiness that persists in the singer's life after the loss. The idea of the loved one visiting in dreams is a common belief that is referenced in various cultures, where the dream is considered a window into the afterlife. The singer is still trying to come to terms with the loss, and the question 'How?' that is repeated throughout the song, shows the difficulty in accepting the finality of death.

This one is from their debut and I'm pretty sure it must be overlooked and to seldom played all over the world. It's close to my top-100 of favourite songs.
