Zauner released a tape in June 2013 under the solo moniker Japanese Breakfast. The tape was titled June and boasted thirty tracks written and recorded every day of the month. A stark deviation from Little Big League's guitar-based indie rock, it showcased Zauner's dark lyrics, unique vocals and inherent knack for pop melody.
Two bedroom pop cassettes later, Japanese Breakfast returns with a first full-fledged LP and vinyl release, Psychopomp. The album explores Zauner's experimental interests and hosts a wide range of sound: jarring anime samples, minimalist ballads, rhythms and synths reminiscent of Tango in the Night-era Fleetwood Mac paired with the moody intimacy of Mount Eerie. Psychopomp revisits and revamps lo-fi tracks and adds chilling new songs to fall in love with.
In 2019, Japanese Breakfast released two singles under the W Hotels music label, "Essentially" and a cover of the Tears for Fears song, Head Over Heels.
In 2021, Zauner returns, having released three singles to her upcoming album, Jubilee, which will be out on the 4th of June. The singles are Be Sweet, Posing in Bondage, and Savage Good Boy; they were released in this order.
The Woman That Loves You

With a postponed marriage and a stalled out car
Then you leave me in the back with half a window rolled down
Like a dog, like a dog
In the summer heat
Don't you think?
Don't you think?
To the woman that loves you
Oh, we'll stay
Oh, we'll stay
Together for the weekend, honey
The weekend, babe
Me and you
Frosted blue
But we're gazing out for better things
You should try to do as little harm as you can
To the woman that loves you
You should try to do as little harm as you can
To the woman that loves you
The lyrics to Japanese Breakfast's song "The Woman That Loves You" express feelings of hurt and frustration towards someone who seems to be taking their love for granted. The first verse, "You're embarrassing me/With a postponed marriage and a stalled out car/Then you leave me in the back with half a window rolled down/Like a dog, like a dog/In the summer heat," paints a picture of a scenario where the singer is left behind by someone who is supposed to care for them. The comparison to a dog highlights the power dynamic between the two parties, with the singer feeling belittled and disrespected. The repetition of "Don't you think?" emphasizes the frustration and disappointment that the singer feels towards the other person's behavior.
In the chorus, the lyrics advise the person to try and do as little harm as possible to the woman that loves them. The repeated phrase "You should try to do as little harm as you can" emphasizes the importance of kindness and respect in a relationship. The second verse, "Oh, we'll stay/Together for the weekend, honey/The weekend, babe/Me and you/Frosted blue/But we're gazing out for better things" depicts a moment of hope and unity between the two parties. However, the chorus reminds the person of their responsibility to not take their partner's love for granted.
Overall, "The Woman That Loves You" is a poignant and relatable song that expresses the complex emotions that come with loving someone who may not always treat us with the kindness and respect we deserve.

Me estás avergonzando
You're embarrassing me
Con un matrimonio pospuesto y un auto parado
With a postponed marriage and a stalled out car
Luego me dejas atrás con media ventanilla bajada
Then you leave me in the back with half a window rolled down
Como un perro, como un perro
Like a dog, like a dog
En el calor del verano
In the summer heat
¿No te parece?
Don't you think?
¿No te parece?
Don't you think?
Deberías intentar hacer el menor daño posible.
You should try to do as little harm as you can
A la mujer que te ama
To the woman that loves you
Oh, nos quedaremos
Oh, we'll stay
Oh, nos quedaremos
Oh, we'll stay
Juntos por el fin de semana, cariño
Together for the weekend, honey
El fin de semana, nena
The weekend, babe
Tu y yo
Me and you
Azul mate
Frosted blue
Pero estamos buscando cosas mejores
But we're gazing out for better things
Deberías intentar hacer el menor daño posible.
You should try to do as little harm as you can
A la mujer que te ama
To the woman that loves you
Deberías intentar hacer el menor daño posible.
You should try to do as little harm as you can
A la mujer que te ama
To the woman that loves you
