Mad World
Jasmine Thompson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere

Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I wanna drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
Find it hard to tell you,
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it's a very, very
Mad world, mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday, happy birthday
And I feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen

Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me, what's my lesson?
Look right through me, look right through me

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
Find it hard to tell you,
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it's a very, very
Mad world
Mad world

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Mad World" by Jasmine Thompson paints a picture of a world that is bleak and meaningless. The song opens with the singer observing the people around her who appear to be caught up in a daily routine which leads them nowhere. They wear their exhaustion and disillusionment like a badge of honor as they go through life without any hope or ambition.

The second verse touches on the theme of isolation and the fear of being ignored. The singer recounts her school days where she felt invisible and unimportant. The world seems alienating and uncaring which then creates a sense of loneliness and detachment from the people around her.

The chorus explores the juxtaposition of joy and despair, where the dreams of dying are the best ones the singer has ever had. The chorus repeats the phrase "mad world" emphasizing the haunting and hard-to-pin-down atmosphere that the song creates. In conclusion, "Mad World" is a powerful and poignant commentary on the soul-crushing reality of modern life.

If you've already heard one version, it's not easy to still be open to an alternative new version. But I will give it a try. The voice is excellent. No distracting show around it is good too. My problem is that the song needs wisdom for credibility. That usually means an older age to look back at the past life. Learning the lessons and prepare for post life. I admit, not every old person is wise, and sometimes very young people are further along than others (Greta Thunberg, for example). Call me limited and unfair, but I think in 10 years she can make it even more impressive. It's my humble opinion.

Actually I'm pretty sure this is using audio from a video she recorded at 13

This song is 40(!) years old and it STILL hits you right in the gut. Amazing!

Especially the Michael Andrews-arranged "slow" version (first sung by Gary Jules.) The original fast version is good, but the song takes on a completely different meaning slowed down and acoustic.

D'habitude je n'aime pas trop les reprises, mais quelques-unes font exception et la voix de Jasmine sur cette chanson est juste magnifique.
