After leaving PWL in 1991, Jason starred in a revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical 'Joseph & His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat'. His version of the show's 'Any Dream Will Do' reached the UK #1 spot.
After numerous film and television projects Jason signed to Polydor Records and recorded a third album, "All Around The World", in 1993. This album was never released in his homeland Australia. The album was preceded by a UK Tour and 2 hit singles; "Mission Of Love" and a cover of "As Time Goes By". By the time the album was released, interest had dried up. The final single "All Around The World" was released in 1993.
Despite a high public profile, Donovan's star faded very quickly after his West End success. Indeed, for a brief period, Donovan was on the receiving end of open hostility from the same LGBT community which had supported his PWL era career after he sued a UK magazine for libel after it suggested - falsely - that Donovan may be homosexual.
Donovan is partnered with Angela Malloch, and they have two children together. He now works as the Heart.fm radio studios which broadcasts across the country

My true love was true
I of course replied
"Something here inside
Cannot be denied"
They said someday you'll find
All who love are blind
You don't realize
Smoke gets in your eyes
So I chaffed and I gaily laughed
To think they would doubt my love
Yet today, my love has flown away
I am without my love
Now laughing friends deride
Tears I cannot hide
So I smile and say
"When a lovely flame dies,
Smoke gets in your eyes."
The lyrics of the song, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes by Jason Donovan, expresses the idea of love being a deeply felt emotion that cannot be explained intellectually. The opening line, "They asked me how I knew my true love was true" sets the scene for a conversation between the singer and others who doubt his love. The singer responds that he feels something inside him that cannot be denied. The lyrics suggest that some things in life are unexplainable, and that includes the feeling of love.
The song highlights the idea that sometimes when a person is in love, it can lead to blindness. The lyrics, "All who love are blind, when your heart's on fire, you don't realize, smoke gets in your eyes" suggest that the person who is in love might not be able to see things clearly because of the intense emotional connection. However, when the love ends, the smoke clears, and reality sets in.
The final lines of the song, "Now laughing friends deride, tears I cannot hide, so I smile and say when a lovely flame dies, smoke gets in your eyes" suggest that the singer's love has ended, but he cannot express his true emotions as his friends mock him. Hence, he smiles and says these lines to hide his true emotions. The song leaves the audience with a sense of the bittersweet feeling of love.
