Jason Isbell's debut solo album Sirens from the Ditch was released on July 10th, 2007, on New West Records. With his band The 400 Unit, he toured in support of this release in the US and Canada during the summer and fall of 2007. Danko / Manuel

Tilt your head back and try to cough
Don't say nothing 'bout the things you never saw
Let the night air cool you off
I ain't living like I should
A little rest might do me good
Got to sinking in the place where I once stood
Can you hear that singing sounds like gold
Maybe I can only hear it in my head
Fifteen years ago they owned that road
Now it's rolling over us instead
Richard Manuel is dead
God forbid you call their bluff
Like the nightmares ain't enough
Remember when we used to think that we were tough?
God forbid you call their bluff
First they make you out to be
The only pirate on the sea
They say Danko would have sounded just like me
Is that the man you want to be?
Can you hear that singing sounds like gold
Maybe I could make it bigger overseas
Fifteen years ago they owned this road
Now it only gives us somewhere else to leave
Something else you can't believe
Can you hear that singing sounds like gold
Maybe I can hear poor Richard from the grave
Singing where to reap and when to sow
When you've found another home you have to leave
Something else you can't believe
Something else you can't believe
The lyrics to Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit's song Danko/Manuel paint a picture of a man who is lost and struggling to come to terms with his current state of life. The song's first verse suggests that the singer is looking for some sort of escape, as he advises to let the night air cool you off and try to forget about the things you never saw. The second verse reveals the personal struggles of the singer β he's not living life as he should and is sinking in a place where he once stood, suggesting he's lost his identity or purpose.
The song's chorus references Richard Manuel from The Band, who committed suicide in 1986. It's unclear what Manuel represents to Isbell, but it's possible that his death serves as a reminder of the impermanence of life, as well as the fleeting nature of fame and success. The line, "God forbid you call their bluff," suggests that Isbell is cognizant of the music industry's games and is urging others not to fall for them. The song's final verse touches on the desire for success and recognition as an artist, acknowledging that the industry has changed significantly since the heyday of The Band, and that the path to success is no longer as clear-cut as it once was.
Overall, Danko/Manuel is a poignant and introspective song that uses the story of Richard Manuel and The Band to reflect on the complexities of life and the music industry. It's a haunting reminder that even those who seem to have it all can still suffer and that we need to be cautious of the image we project to the world.

Love this song - still brilliant
The a Dirty South is an awesome DBT album - several stand-out cuts but this is haunting and wonderful. This is a slightly different version featuring some lovely guitar work and fiddle playing.
Jason is a great writer and is stretching himself - his albums with the 400 Unit are seriously good
Southeastern another great record
Agree DBT still producing great music
Saw them on latest tour and English Oceans another fantastic record. Hood and Cooley still delivering.
Go Go Boots, Creation's Dark and Big To Do are all laced with trademark songwriting, and great playing.
Jason left on good terms with the guys - certainly in better health now he's stopped drinking, married Amanda and is getting the acclaim he deserves.
Long May Jason, DBT and Amanda Shires keep on entertaining us
Gotta love good music
