Outfit
Jason Isbell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You want to grow up to paint houses like me
A trailer in my yard till you're twenty three
You want to be old after forty two years
Keep dropping the hammer and grinding the gears

Well, I used to go out in a Mustang, a 302 Mach One in green
Me and your Mama made you in the back and I sold it to buy her a ring
And I learned not to say much of nothing so I figured you already know
But in case you don't or maybe forgot, I'll lay it out real nice and slow

Don't call what your wearing an outfit, don't ever say your car is broke
Don't worry about losing your accent, a southern man tells better jokes
Have fun, stay clear of the needle, call home on your sister's birthday
Don't tell them you're bigger than Jesus, don't give it away

Five years in a St. Florian foundry, they call it Industrial Park
Then hospital maintenance and tech school just to memorize Frigidaire parts
But I got to missing your Mama and I got to missing you too
And I went back to painting for my old man and I guess that's what I'll always do

So don't try to change who you are boy, and don't try to be who you ain't
And don't let me catch you in Kendale with a bucket of wealthy-man's paint

Don't call what your wearing an outfit, don't ever say your car is broke
Don't sing with a fake British accent, don't act like your family's a joke
Have fun, but stay clear of the needle, call home on your sister's birthday
Don't tell them you're bigger than Jesus, Don't give it away

Don't give it away

Overall Meaning

The song "Outfit" by Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit provides a father's advice to his son about life. The father is sharing his own experiences with his son, advising him on what to do and what to avoid while navigating through life. He starts by stating that his son wants to become a professional painter like him and that he intends to keep working hard until he turns 42 years old. He advises him to keep working hard, one day at a time, and to avoid ever losing his southern accent. Furthermore, he encourages him to have fun and call home on his sister's birthday.

The father also talks about his past experiences, including how he sold his prized possession (a Mach One Mustang car) to buy his wife an engagement ring. He also shares how he learned not to talk much and reveals that he has been to St. Florian foundry, worked as a hospital maintenance worker, and went to tech school to learn about Frigidaire parts. However, he missed his Mama and son, so he went back to painting for his father. In the end, he advises his son not to change who he is, not to pretend to be someone he is not, and not to give away his power by boasting about his accomplishments to others.

The band I used to play in was graced by Jason's presence at a show we were playing. I so happy and proud that I can say I played drums live with him one night and played Outfit. I have the recording!

“Some people never got over ‘Nam. Or the time their band opened for Nirvana.” — Nick Hornby, High Fidelity. In all seriousness, that’s amazing and something no one can ever take away from you...

Man... The tone of that first G chord and the little D to C riff is perfection.. Not to mention the poetry that is the lyrics. Quite a talent, quite a group. The "don't tell them you're bigger than jesus don't give it away" is a fantastic couplet..its open to interpretation and he's great at that.. I'll stop now lol 😂 I just love this tune.
