The Road
Jason Isbell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I used to think that this was my town
What a stupid thing to think
I hear you're fighting off a breakdown
I myself am on the brink
I used to want to be a real man
I don't know what that even means
Now I just want you in my arms again
And we can search each other's dreams

I know you're tired
And you ain't sleeping well
Uninspired
And likely mad as hell
But wherever you are
I hope the high road leads you home again

I've heard enough of the white man's blues
I've sang enough about myself
So if you're looking for some bad news
You can find it somewhere else
Last year was a son of a bitch
For nearly everyone we know
But I ain't fighting with you down in the ditch
I'll meet you up here on the road

I know you're tired
And you ain't sleeping well
Uninspired
And likely mad as hell
But wherever you are
I hope the high road leads you home again
To a world you want to live in

We'll ride the ship down
Dumping buckets overboard
There can't be more of them than us
There can't be more

I know you're tired
And you ain't sleeping well
Uninspired
And likely mad as hell
But wherever you are
I hope the high road leads you home again

To a world you want to live in
To a world you want to live in

Overall Meaning

In Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit's song, "Hope the High Road," Isbell reflects on his past beliefs and aspirations while acknowledging the struggles his loved ones face in the present. He recognizes the futility of wanting to be a "real man" but now only desires to be with his loved ones again to "search each other's dreams." Isbell then speaks directly to his dear one, who is likely dealing with mental health issues, stating that he hopes they find their way back home on the high road. Even though things have been hard last year, he pledges not to bring his loved one down with him but rather, they will ride up the roads together. He hopes that his loved one finds themselves in a world they'd feel happy to live in.

The song's message is a plea for optimism in the face of adversity. Isbell urges listeners to keep on the high road, even when the going gets tough, and to separate oneself from negativity. Through hope and perseverance, Isbell believes one can find their way back home to a world where they feel safe and welcomed.
