Crying
Jay & The Americans Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was all right for a while, I could smile for a while
But I saw you last night, you held my hand so tight
As you stopped to say "Hello"
Aw you wished me well, you couldn't tell

That I'd been crying over you, crying over you
Then you said "so long". left me standing all alone
Alone and crying, crying, crying crying
It's hard to understand but the touch of your hand
Can start me crying

I thought that I was over you but it's true, so true
I love you even more than I did before but darling what can I do
For you don't love me and I'll always be

Crying over you, crying over you
Yes, now you're gone and from this moment on

I'll be crying, crying, crying, crying
Yeah crying, crying, over you

Overall Meaning

The song 'Crying' by Jay & The Americans is about a man who thought he was over his ex-significant other until a chance meeting made him realize that he still had feelings for her. The song starts with the man saying that he was okay and could smile for a while, but then he saw his ex-partner last night, and she held his hand so tightly as she said hello. She wished him well, but she couldn't tell that he had been crying over her. Then, she said goodbye and left him standing all alone, and he couldn't help but cry.

The second verse starts with the man saying that he thought he was over her, but it's true that he loves her even more than he did before. However, he knows that she doesn't love him back, and he will always be crying over her. The man then repeats the chorus, saying that he'll be crying over her from this moment on.

Jay does well here. He may be one of the few voices that can match Roy's version.

Jay is the only one to even come close to the perfection that was Roy Orbison! What a voice, Jay!

Jay was one of the few capable of "Out-Orbinsonning" Orbison. With all due respect to Roy Orbison, and I was a big fan of him since I was a young boy back in the 60's, I have to concede that Jay Black did an even better job than Orbison on this song. Smoother and not sounding a bit strained, as Orbison sometimes done when making the shift to higher range. Also, Jay didn't have to resort to a FALSETTO voice, as Orbison did, in order to hit the high notes. He stayed in his natural voice on up./

"Llorando" una canción triste pero muy bien cantada por Jay Black. Y es algo que hemos hecho todos si hemos vivido suficiente. Me gusta escuchar la poderosa voz de tenor del cantante.

I love Roy's version but this version by Jay is pretty awesome too. I like Roy's better but probably because I heard Roy's version first and heard it many more times. This is my first time hearing this one. I guess you could say I have been imprinted by Roy. Both versions are great. By the way, I kinda like it when I hear great singers strain for the elusive high note. It seems to add to the emotionality of the song and performance. Just my two cents.

One of the most underrated groups. Jay was a fantastic singer. He's awesome on this song.

Good sad song and sung with so much feeling by Jay Black. I have liked it since I first heard it sung by Roy Orbison. Jay has such a nice and powerful tenor voice really.

Mate, Roy Orbison is hands down my all time Rock 🎸 hero. However After listening in depth the last several years to Jay Black, I will now add that the Big O and Jay Black are my two utmost vocal hero's of Rock/ Pop and there is no debates there.
It also brings a warm smile to my face to know that these two outstanding legendary vocalists were also good friends. I highly doubt given the direction that the music industry has gone in over the last decade or so there will ever be any like these two to ever bestow us with such incredible voices.
Rest in power Gentlemen. You BOTH left behind a legacy that will stand the test of time.

What an awesome cover. Rarely are the covers as good or better, but Jay Black does not pale to stand in Orbison's shadow like everyone else does he?

Mr Jay Black ( David Platt) is the man he took the Jay & Americans to new heights he was certainly "The Voice" . A great 1960's group only because Jay Black was the led singer. 5/5 Yes as good as the big O .
