Originally performed by The Creatures. Jeff performed it live at Astoria, London, on January 18 1995.
I wait and wait
sleepwalk the hourglass
this way and that
the pendulum swings
yes there's plenty of time
always time left to kill
does time stand still
or hurtle on by?

let time unwind
let all the cogs fall out
let mans machines
collapse and rust
face down in the dust
i'll kiss no other lips
a life time of nothing
condemned without you

been so long here
i could die here
lying by your side
but time won't claim me
time and me only
i'm just killing time

if the sun went out
i wouldn't mind too much
who needs the days
to trouble to fill?
if the moon didn't rise
i wouldn't be upset
who needs moonshine
to cause tears to spill?

i've been so long here
i could lie here
under dying sky
this thirst and hunger
holds no wonder
i'm just killing time

i await your return
there's no other one

Overall Meaning

In Jeff Buckley’s song “Killing Time,” he speaks about waiting for someone and the passage of time. He notes how there seems to be plenty of it, yet it is uncertain whether it slows down or speeds up. He emphasizes the idea of waiting and killing time. This is seen when he says, “I wait and wait, sleepwalk the hourglass, this way and that pendulum swings, yes there’s plenty of time, always time left to kill…” He portrays himself as being stuck in a purgatory-like state where he is waiting for someone to return, unable to move on with his life.

The lyrics suggest that he is passing time by running away from it. “Let time unwind, let all the cogs fall out, let man’s machines collapse and rust, face down in the dust…” He is waiting for someone to return to give his life meaning. He speaks about the insignificance of time if the sun didn’t rise or the moon didn’t set. All he desires is for that special someone to come back, “I’m just killing time…I await your return, there’s no other one…”

Overall, the song portrays the feeling of being stuck in the limbo of life, waiting for something to change. It captures the essence of the one’s inability to move on with their life, holding on to the idea that if that special someone comes back, they will have a reason to live again.

River Forest

i usually do not like it when anyone covers Siouxsie Sioux but this is an exception. This is absolutely great.

pangrac1

@L No, they didnt.

L

They covered HIM. Do your research.

Fix'n Things

Like he wrote it. Fantastic! There’s a great interview with Budgie and Siouxsie about him covering their song. Search it!

Shez Krafty

How many mornings this CD was played over breakfast.
A perfect cover! Happy to stumble upon it.
Was this recorded at Sine or ???

Daniel Headrick

The song was originally recorded by The Creatures. "Killing Time" was written by Siouxsie Sioux and Budgie, circa 1989.

@L Nope. That's why, in the documentary about Buckley, Budgie spoke of how when he first (unknowingly) met Buckley, through Knox Chandler, Buckley said, "You know, I do one of your Creatures songs in my set...'Killing Time'." Siouxsie was flattered to find out that he had covered a Creatures song, esp., "Killing Time".

L

WRONG, they did his cover.
