Please Send Me Someone To Love
Jeff Buckley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Heaven please send to all mankind,
Understanding and peace of mind.
But, if it's not asking too much
Please send me someone to love.

Show all the world how to get along,
Peace will enter when hate is gone.
But, if it's not asking too much,
Please send me someone to love.

I lay awake night and ponder world troubles.
My answer is always the same.
That unless men put an end to all of this,
Hate will put the world in a flame, (oh) what a shame.
Just because I'm in misery.
I don't beg for no sympathy.
But if it's not asking too much,
Just send me someone to love.

Just because I'm in misery,
I don't beg for no sympathy.

But if it's not asking too much,
Please send me someone to love.

Overall Meaning

In Jeff Buckley's song "Please Send Me Someone To Love", he appeals to a higher power to send love and understanding to all of mankind. The first two lines of the song could be seen as a plea for universal peace and empathy, but the lyrics quickly turn personal as Buckley asks for someone to love. This request seems like a small one in comparison to the larger issues facing the world, but it is clear that Buckley sees personal love as crucial to finding harmony in society at large.

The plea for love is repeated throughout the song, and the repetition emphasizes the desperation of the singer's request. Buckley sings about the world's troubles and how they keep him up at night, but ultimately he acknowledges that he's asking for love because he, personally, is in misery. Here, the song takes on a new depth as it becomes clear that Buckley's appeal for love is driven by his own pain and longing for connection.

Overall, "Please Send Me Someone To Love" is a complex and moving reflection on the relationship between personal and universal concerns. The song is a reminder that a small act of love or kindness can have a ripple effect in the world, but it is also an acknowledgement that sometimes, when the world feels overwhelming, all we can ask for is someone to love us.

just when you think you heard everything, another gem appears

I feel like this 'being' could be or might have been an ascended master or a similar ethereal figure. His voice evokes a myriad of unearthly sensations, creating unique atmospheres, and even transcending dimensions. It's like if he places you into a trance, transporting you to a realm far beyond the known universe. This ability is reminiscent of what only ancient prophets, mystics were known to achieve. I understand that traces of your existence still linger here and there. I hope our paths cross somewhere along our infinite journey.

This is so brilliant.....he must have been very young here.....and listening to the vocal build and take shape.....the guitar work is fabulous......gone too soon.

@smartymarty82

i completely agree, blues just seems to ooze out of him. the mergence of being and expression, he is what he plays and sings, every note an emotion, every chord a memory. a rare breed indeed

@wreard

besides his great looks, sense of humor and amazing voice he has the most natural approach to guitar i've heard since early blues, Jimi Hendrix or a hand full of many other revolutionary artists. He has a great touch and fluid sense of music that very few posses. I could go on but I wont...Just wanted to ad to the dialogue. Peace :)
