This truly makes me sad. Even in Australia, we heard so much about Gabby Petito (may she RIP), but I had NEVER heard of Jelani and his case. 10:48 I've been to this dispensary. People are required to look up at the camera at this dispensary. Also I'm a Bloomington-normal native, and there hasn't been much local news coverage about Jelani at all. This video is very helpful.

@Nat LITERALLY THOUGH. I've been pulled over, harassed, and threatened by the Normal police for literally NOTHING before and it was terrifying. I remember shaking after it. They isolated me from my friends in the car with me by making me get out of my car (while it was snowing) and threatened me to try to get me to "admit" to being on my phone at a stop light (I wasn't) by saying if I'm lying I would be going to jail.

I just can't imagine a man like this has any enemies. He seems so genuine and kind, and if he's anything like his mother and family this is definitely true. This is a very suspicious case and even if by some chance it WAS an accident, this isn't how a case should be handled. Ever. I can't imagine how this is not being treated as a crime. We have a missing person who was reported by people OUTSIDE OF THE FAMILY as suspicious! That says a lot. We have a car obviously "ditched'. We have a deceased person. And we have items of value separated from the owner.

There has got to be more video footage of this young man and his vehicle on that day. Where is the video of him exiting the dispensary? Was he approached outside of it? Is there video of the car passing the businesses near the dispensary? Carjacking/robbery just rings loud in my mind. Maybe someone that knew him, maybe a total stranger. Definitely appears suspicious and not suicidal. Police SHOULD always investigate it as criminal activity initially until the evidence determines it is not. Same as Marshal Iwasaa case. Missing man, ditched vehicle which was torched. Police appear to not investigate as criminal because it could be deliberate actions. How about they prove that through investigation?!?! Then precious evidence and time will not be lost!

I saw a news report on this case in the middle of the Gabby Petito investigation. As a Texan, I live far away from both areas, but I saw MUCH MORE media coverage and resources poured into Gabby's case. When I saw Jelani's mom cry, I cried. It's sad that she had to PUSH to get investigators and the coroner to help find and identify her son.

You are pretty much the only channel that treats these cases with the respect they deserve. Other channels use these to become famous and have lost their way and their intro start as if they are about to have a comedy special, just to be cool. They intro with welcome back, smash that like button, and then joke around about life before they joke throughout case and almost relay the case like it’s hot gossip. >> Thanks for respecting victims so well. Even other famous famous channels just miss that mark because they like gaining followers. I feel you gain followers because you are just good at speaking/sharing about cases and CARE in a humble, aware way. Sorry for your loss as well Kendall. Much love x

It is clear that in the mind of the media, and police; not all lives are equal. Gabby was a was an up and coming YouTuber traveling in a van for adventure. Jelani was a graduate student in an extremely competitive field. Only one of them was deemed important enough to find. It’s great that Gabby got the coverage that she did but it is so devastating that Jelani was not afforded the same opportunity. There really should be a clear protocol for missing persons and it should be illegal to have disproportionate coverage in the media.

I live in Chicago but I have NOT heard about this case at all. However, time and time again Southern Illinois counties in general historically have had issues with investigations regarding Black residents. ISU isn't even that far from Chicago and yet it is like night and day. I think it's wise that his family requested FBI support. Something doesn't sit right and it probably has to do with attention to details from investigators. Saying that he was depressed and drowned is easier than digging deep and looking into everything. I want to believe the phone will give the answers needed. Praying for his family.

First off I want to thank you Kendall for your amazing content. You put a lot of work and effort into everything that you cover and thank you for being a advocate for the families out there who deserve justice. The Day family needs and deserves justice. In my honest opinion I feel that someone at that school knows something. And this may be a stretch but someone may even have been jealous of him. You can have enemies that you don't know of and he had a lot of great things going on for him in his life. And he had too much love surrounding him from friends and family to take his own life. Waited a few days to watch this one because I knew it would rip my heart out. This is local to where I live, and I went to ISU myself. It was so heartbreaking to see how little coverage this got when he was missing. Immense amounts of love and support to the Day family. Law enforcement is a huge factor but we're also part of the problem. Sharing and taking interest and pushing back on cases like this is so important. You're awesome Kendall. So they took the license plates but LEFT the car. Dragged the body to the lake and left him there to rot for weeks. Scattered the belongings around to create confusion and left the family with no answers. Whoever killed him, knew him. This looks personal.

There is a case near me that everyone seems to have forgotten. A mother of 3 just disappeared in our rural area of Illinois. This is so heart breaking. It blows my mind how many missing persons cases get thrown under the rug by police. A girl from my hometown Faith Roach has been missing for years, with absolute no help from the police. The citizens of the small town have done more detective work then the police. The case is still unsolved. You can tell Jelani was an amazing young man with a bright future. I pray for his family.

It's sad that us who are brown and black are thought of last when we go missing. It's assumed we brought it on ourselves in some way or for some folks it's truly a "one less n*****" thought. A cute white girl went missing and she got international attention. A black man who is a promising doctoral student goes missing and it's practically forgotten about and the victim is also blamed by many for his death.

I’m from Indiana and this case has gotten devastatingly little coverage. The first time I heard his name at all was in comparison to Gabby, but even then I heard nothing else until this video. I didn’t even fully realize it was so close to home. His mother’s heart reaches out to everyone that hears her speak, and I feel like if her voice is raised up, it may be his best chance at justice. I just wish the burden didn’t fall on her…

Thank you for your service! The lack of supporting from police is very disappointing. Sounds like this police department is incompetent investigating a case of this magnitude! I am glad to hear the FBI is helping. This family deserves better and so does the public. This crap cannot be happening. I do wish these kids to leave drugs alone of any kind as when obtaining them your dealing with some pretty shady slimeballs. I am no tolerance to drugs.
I do believe lawenforcement can find answers to this case.
