Fylingdale Flyer
Jethro Tull Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Through clear skies tracking lightly from far down the line
No fanfare, just a blip on the screen.
No quick conclusions now everything will be fine,
Short-circuit glitch and not what it seems.
Fylingdale Flyer you're only half way there,
Green screen liar for a second or so we were running scared.

On late shift, feeling drowsy eyes glued to the display.
Dead cert alert, lit match to the straw.
One last quick game of bowls we can still win the day.
Fail-safe; forget the things that you saw.
Fylingdale Flyer you're only half way there,
Green screen liar for a second or so we were running scared.

They checked the systems through and they read A-O.K.
Some tiny fuse has probably blown
Sit back; relax and soon it will just go away,
Keep your hands off that red telephone.
Fylingdale Flyer you're only half way there,
Green screen liar for a second or so we were running scared.

Fylingdale Flyer you're only half way there,
Green screen liar for a second or so we were running scared.

Overall Meaning

The song "Fylingdale Flyer" by Jethro Tull speaks about a situation that takes place in the control room of the Fylingdales Ballistic Missile Early Warning System. The singer is monitoring the system, and a blip appears on the screen. Initially, there is confusion about whether it is a short-circuit glitch or a genuine alert indicating an imminent missile attack.

The singer is "running scared" for a second or so, but on closer examination, the situation turns out to be less severe than initially thought. The song reflects the anxieties of the Cold War era, when the threat of a nuclear attack was a genuine concern. The singer's initial fear and subsequent relief represent the anxieties and fears that were prevalent among the general public during the Cold War.

The song reflects the band's concerns about nuclear war and the dangers associated with the arms race between the superpowers of the world. The lyrics are rich in imagery, and the band's use of language adds to the sense of apprehension and anxiety that pervaded the era.

Same, with the sole mention that it's been stuck in my head for many years to this date and even beyond! All the best and rock on! :) \m/

Album "A" is truly underrated.

Victor Rouă

You said it, you are so right! It's actually one of Tull's best studio albums, but then again Tull seems to be to be way to underrated, unfortunately, even in the classic rock genre! There is hope for the future though, I am a 24-year-old guy who grew up listening to them! :)

I wasn’t much a fan of A, but have put Fylingdale Flyer into recent rotation. On another note, I really love both versions of Jack-A-Lynn and have that in frequent rotation lately too. Shame it wasn’t on an original release album.

No, should have stayed as an Anderson solo album, lots of very average on this. This and "And Further on" are exceptions.

Да фиг знает, он мне всегда нравился))) А звук на нём очень отличается от всего, что я на тот момент слышал. Ди и до сих пор это для меня один из эталонов звука при сведении.
