The Witch
Jethro Tull Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lend me your ear while i call you a fool.
You were kissed by a witch one night in the wood,
And later insisted your feelings were true.
The witch's promise was coming,
Believing he listened while laughing you flew.

Leaves falling red, yellow, brown, all are the same,
And the love you have found lay outside in the rain.
Washed clean by the water but nursing its pain.
The witch's promise was coming, and you're looking
Elsewhere for your own selfish gain.

Keep looking, keep looking for somewhere to be,
Well, you're wasting your time, they're not stupid like he is.
Meanwhile leaves are still falling, you're too blind to see.

You won't find it easy now, it's only fair.
He was willing to give to you, you didn't care.
You're waiting for more but you've already had your share.

The witch's promise is turning, so don't you wait up
For him, he's going to be late.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jethro Tull's song "The Witch's Promise" tell the story of a man who was "kissed by a witch one night in the wood", and who then believed her promise to him. However, as time went on, he found that the love he had thought he had found was not what he had expected. He was "looking elsewhere for your own selfish gain" and "wasting your time" because he was too blind to see what was right in front of him. The promise that the witch had made was turning, and he was going to be left alone.

The song is a cautionary tale about trusting promises that seem too good to be true. It's a tale about someone who was so blinded by their own desires that they couldn't see what was right in front of them. The man in this story was willing to give up everything for a promise that could never be kept.

Overall, Jethro Tull's "The Witch's Promise" is a powerful and thought-provoking song about love, loss, and the dangers of trusting in something that is ultimately empty.

I first heard this gorgeous song at age 14 - and now at 64, still get goosebumps hearing it! It's such a gift being able to watch Ian, Glen, Clive and Martin perform it...I've seen Tull many times, across several continents in the half century since. But seeing this - those young men in their prime - is quite touching. I'm sure they don't feel this one bit, but for us old farts across the globe...well, we feel fragile, a little sad - and so grateful that we had such wonderful music to soundcheck our lives. Thanks, Ian.

I I was probably @8 or 10 when tIan Anderson and Tull first emerged on the scene. Other kids listened to so many other great bands of that time. All I wanted was more Tull from my earliest of memories. Still can’t get enough❤️

@Tomy Osch I saw him in concert a few years ago. The voice is showing strain but what a great performer.

The flute has got a helluva lot to do with it. It just transports their early songs to a completely magical and unique place.

@Thomas Andersen A Lot of punk bands were singles bands , Jethro Tull were an album band , John Lydon ended up advertising butter on TV , Punk was more attitude than substance.

They were real minstrels
