Phillips got her start in a music career when she graduated from Belmont University in 1998. Her first, self-named album was produced by grammy-award winning Wayne Kirkpatrick who has produced for such artists as Amy Grant, Garth Brooks, and Susan Ashton. Kirkpatrick said that it was "the honesty of her [Phillips'] songs, the charm of her voice, and the strength of her character that drew me to her as an artist — I knew that being involved with someone like that would be time well spent." Following the release of first album, Phillips toured with Caedmon’s Call and Bebo Norman.
Soon Phillips made her jump from the sidelines by recording her next album, God and Money, independently. This album became her biggest break into the CCM industry and was raved by CCM Magazine as reader’s choice for Independent Artist of the Year in 2002.
In 2003 Phillips was signed by Fervent Records and she released her third album, Writing on the Wall, on which she collaborated with many other artists, including Andrew Peterson, Bebo Norman and Stephen Mason of Jars of Clay.
In 2005, Phillips released a speciality album called Kingdom Come and recorded her fifth and most recent album Nobody's Got It All Together, which was released in early 2006.
In 2006, Phillips founded the Square Peg Alliance with twelve other independent Christian artists in order to cross-promote each other's music.
She currently tours her new album with her husband, singer-songwriter Andy Gullahorn, while retaining plenty of time for her two children. Jill is also a self-proclaimed cook, loves to visit The Outer Banks of North Carolina and is an avid watcher of Meet The Press.

The Door
Jill Phillips Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I come to you with my broken heart in my hands
Since you brought dead ones to life
I know you can do that with mine
So I come to you with my broken heart in my hands
I come to you with an anxious and troubled mind
I come to you with an anxious and troubled mind
I know that you will bring peace
So I come to you with an anxious and troubled mind
I ask I seek and knock
I ask I seek and knock
I ask I seek and knock
That the door will be opened
I come to you with the burdens I can not bear
I come to you with the burdens I can not bear
Your yoke is easy so I
Can trade them for one that is light
So I come to you with the burdens I can not bear
I ask I seek and knock
I ask I seek and knock
I ask I seek and knock
That the door will be opened
The door will be opened
The door will be opened
I come to you with a life that I do not own
I come to you with a life that I do not own
The door to your kingdom is grace
And you gave your own life away
That the door will be opened
The door will be opened
The door will be opened
The door will be opened
The door will be opened
The door will be opened
The lyrics of Jill Phillips's song "The Door" express an individual coming to the Lord with their brokenness, anxieties, and burdens, seeking peace, hope, and redemption. The singer acknowledges the Lord's power to bring the dead to life and calm the seas, and thus believes the Lord can heal their broken heart and anxious mind. The singer also believes that the Lord will "open the door" for them if they ask, seek, and knock. The door to the Lord's kingdom is through grace, as the Lord gave His own life away for His people.
In essence, the song portrays a manifestation of the individual's faith, a testament to belief in seeking divine intervention in their struggles. In placing their trust in the Lord's grace and compassion, the singer finds reassurance in the midst of their difficulties. The song's lyrics also reinforce the idea that in surrendering oneself to the Lord, one finds light and clarity in the face of life's obstacles.
Overall, "The Door" is a poignant and meaningful expression of surrender and belief, incorporating elements of the Christian faith that resonate with individuals of various spiritual backgrounds.
