Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Brickman enrolled in the Cleveland Institute of Music taking courses in composition and performance, while taking business classes at Case Western Reserve University. His music career started when he was nineteen, when Jim Henson hired him to write tunes for Sesame Street. He was also hired to write commercial jingles while in college.
Brickman writes a wide variety of music. Besides his piano compositions and love songs, he has also created arrangements of other songs. Several of his albums feature arrangements of children's music; he has produced two Christmas-themed albums The Gift (1997) and Peace (2003); and his 2005 album Grace concentrates on arrangements of well-known Christian music.

Journey
Jim Brickman Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Is this all that we get, what a way to go
Five minutes in heaven
Breathe that scream into me, what a sad little show
It feels like love
Not some rigged up holiday
Where I believe in somebody who can bring me down again
Is this how you make me pay
Branding me with deep cuts that will never go away
Five minutes in heaven
Did you stage this yourself, every twist and turn
Five minutes in heaven
What a masterpiece, will we ever learn
It feels like love?
Five minutes in heaven
Is this all that we get, just a shadow, just a screen
Five minutes in heaven
Would you paint that smile made for me, just to wipe it clean
It feels like love?
The lyrics of Jim Brickman's "Journey" tell a story of a relationship that is far from perfect. The song starts with the phrase "Five minutes in heaven," which refers to a brief moment of happiness and contentment. However, the following lyrics change the tone of the song as the singer begins to question the authenticity of the relationship. He wonders if he is settling for something that is not real, merely a facade, and that it is too good to be true. The singer is fully aware of the consequences of loving someone like this, but he still clings to the hope that things could change.
The use of the phrase "it feels like love" emphasizes on the doubt that the singer has about the authenticity of his relationship. He wonders whether the moments of happiness he is experiencing is just an illusion, and he is wary of allowing himself to be vulnerable. The lines "Branding me with deep cuts that will never go away" suggest the deep emotional pain that he feels but is unwilling to let go of. The repetition of "five minutes in heaven" throughout the song adds a layer of irony, highlighting the transience of happiness in the relationship despite the singer's constant pursuit of it.
