Georgia Rose
Jimmie Dale Gilmore Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dusty roads and winter time,
Tonight I'm thinking of the town
And the one I left behind
To do this rambling 'round.
Tonight I'm drinking while I'm thinking
Until the beer joints close
And I'm thinking of someone
I called my Georgia Rose.

It's on dusty streets we walked
And talked of things to be
And she never laughed or mocked
My wanting to be free Tonight I'm free
To walk these streets
While the wind cuts through my clothes.
And I'm free to dream forever
About my Georgia Rose.

So come to my dreams
Sweet as a flower
Blooming among the pines
Georgia Rose
Still my desire
Once you could have been mine.

Sometimes a man makes certain choices
And they lead his heart somewhere
Sometimes he follows certain voices
And he don't seem to care.
Oh how I love that little town
Down on the Eastern coast

And I love that pretty girl
I called my Georgia Rose.

Overall Meaning

The song "Georgia Rose" by Jimmie Dale Gilmore is a poignant reflection on the choices we make in life and the paths they lead us down. The opening lyrics set a wistful tone, as the singer recalls dusty roads and winter time, and reflects on the town and the person he left behind to pursue a life of rambling. As he drinks and thinks, he can't help but dwell on the memory of the one he called his Georgia Rose. The image of her is both tender and melancholy, a testament to a love that was never fully realized.

As the song continues, the singer reminisces about their time together, walking the dusty streets and talking about their dreams. The Georgia Rose of his memory is a gentle, understanding presence, never mocking his desire for freedom but always there to support him. Now, as he walks the same streets alone, he is free to dream forever, but the memory of Georgia Rose remains with him, haunting and bittersweet.

The final verse encapsulates the essence of the song's message, as the singer reflects on the choices he made and the paths that led him away from the town and the girl he loved. He still loves that little town and the pretty girl who once could have been his, but he knows that the choices he made were his alone to make. The song is a powerful reminder of the ways in which our choices shape our lives, and the regret and longing that can result from those choices.

I'm pretty sure Walter Hyatt wrote this one. It's actually one of my favorite songs of all time. I saw a live video of Jimmy Dale Gilmore doing this song years ago, & happy I ran across this more recent live version..Just wonderful!
