Till We Meet Again
Jo Stafford Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Smile the while you kiss me sad adieu
When the clouds roll by, I'll come to you
Then the skies will seem more blue
Down in lovers lane, my dearie

Wedding bells will ring so merrily
Every tear will be a memory
So wait and pray each night for me
Till we meet again

So wait and pray each night for me
Till we meet again

Till we meet again

Down in lover's lane
Wait and pray each night for me

Overall Meaning

The song 'Till We Meet Again' by Jo Stafford is a love ballad that expresses the feelings of two people who are separating, but hope to reunite in the future. The opening line of "Smile the while you kiss me sad adieu" urges the singer's partner to put on a brave face during their farewell, even though they are both sad. The next lines "When the clouds roll by, I'll come to you, then the skies will seem more blue" are a promise of hope that they will reunite and everything will be alright.

The lyrics also suggest that the couple will meet again in a romantic setting, down in lovers lane. The reference to wedding bells ringing merrily in the next stanza makes it clear that the couple is engaged or planning to get married at some point. The final lines of "So wait and pray each night for me, till we meet again" reinforce the idea that the separation is temporary, and they will be reunited someday soon. The song is a sweet and hopeful expression of the enduring power of love and optimism, no matter what obstacles come along.

So beautiful

I just came across this song. My mother (born in 1918) used to whistle this song as she went about her business. I never knew the name of the song, nor did I know what it was about, but I always sensed there was a sadness in my mother when she whistled it. Perhaps she was thinking of someone by then long gone, or maybe the passing of time and family.

Just happened across this. I am a Jo Stafford fan since forever, and this song brings back some wonderful boyhood memories. Beautifully sung by two of the best in the business, and the visuals are so evocative of the ww 2 years. Thanks so much for posting this treasure.

A lovely song from WW II, superbly done. Makes me sad now, these folks gave so much to let this country be free, and look at the mess we're in now.

Beautiful harmony. Ear candy that todays singers seem to be unable to duplicate.
