Tea For Two
Jo Stafford & Gordon Macrae Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Picture you upon my knee
Just tea for two and two for tea
Me for you and you for me alone

Nobody near us
To see us or hear us
No friends or relations
On weekend vacations
We won't have it known, dear
That we own a telephone (oh, I hate telephones) (yeah, me too)

Day will break and you'll awake
And start to bake a sugar cake
For me to take
To all the boys to see

Oh, we will raise a family
A boy for you, a girl for me
Oh, can't you see
How happy we would be?

(Oh, hit me with that tag)

We will raise a family
A boy for you, six little girlies for me

Can't you see
How happy we would be?

Overall Meaning

The song "Tea for Two" by Jo Stafford and Gordon MacRae portrays the dream of a romantic couple to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city life and live in their own, self-invented paradise. The man is discontented with living in rented homes and wishes to build something of his own. He has found a place that is cozy, and with his lover, he wants to live a life where there are no neighbors or friends to interrupt their privacy. They would have tea together, just the two of them, and live in their own small world without anyone else's interference.

In the song, the couple dreams of a life where they will live side by side, and nobody will see or hear them. They do not expect any involvement from the outside world, and their only communication will be with each other. They dream of starting a family and living happily ever after. The couple's desire to escape reality and live in their own paradise represents the longing for inner peace and happiness that people often seek in their daily lives.

Jo's last year at Capitol seems now to have been somewhat different from those previous, even given her trademark versatility -- perhaps in part because the label itself was somewhat in flux with pop evolving (or devolving, depending on one's point of vew); too, she always sounded more at home when being supported by future husband Paul Weston's band. Despite this, she still managed to produce some lovely music, just prior to moving on to Columbia, as this sweet, nostalgic treatment of a classic attests. Jo and Gordon were a most harmonious team!
