How Sweet You Are
Jo Stafford with Paul Weston and His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How sweet you are, how sweet you are,
How dear your tenderly smiling face,
Through days all bitter and gray and grim,
Through nights when even the stars are dim,
How sweet to know my heart can glow
From just the warmth of our first embrace
The world's a lovelier place by far
When I remember how sweet you are.

How sweet to know my heart can glow
From just the warmth of our first embrace
The world's a lovelier place by far

When I remember how sweet you are.
When I remember how sweet you are.

Music writer Gene Lees used "California-modified Tennessee accent" to place the manner of pronunciation to be found in Jo's speaking voice. We must imagine that she acquired her beautiful diction, on glorious display here, from her operatic training. She knew when it fit the material and when it didn't, though. Though not the best known version of this WWII affair, Jo's rendition, on which those bell-like tones ring, is by far the best, IMO.

Thanks to you, The 78prof, for supplying these wonderful early solos, of my favorite lady vocalist. ❤️

How do you get such good sound quality out of these old 78s? I've tried using noise reduction, but it absolutely destroys the quality. The sound comes out very distorted with a decent amount of surface noise.

While careful use of digital noise reduction software can do quite well on some shellac (if it's not too badly worn), note in the video's written description that this particular audio was sourced from CD rather than from the 78.
