I'll Be Seeing You
Jo Stafford with Paul Weston and His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll be seeing you
In all the old, familiar places
That this heart of mine embraces
All day through

In that small cafe
The park across the way
The children's carousel
The chestnut tree
The wishing well

I'll be seeing you
In every lovely, summer's day
And everything that's bright and gay
I'll always think of you that way
I'll find you in the morning sun
And when the night is new

I'll be looking at the moon
But I'll be seeing you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jo Stafford and Paul Weston and His Orchestra's song "I'll Be Seeing You" express the sentiment that even though the singer and her loved one may be separated, they will always be connected and present in various familiar places, memories, and everyday moments. The line "All day through" emphasizes the pervasive nature of this love, and how it permeates the singer's daily life. The specific places she mentions - a cafe, a park, a carousel, a tree, and a well - all evoke a certain nostalgic feeling, as if they hold specific memories that the singer associates with her loved one.

The second verse furthers this sentiment by stating that the love between them will be present in "every lovely, summer's day" and "everything that's bright and gay." The final lines of the song suggest that even when the singer is looking at the moon, she'll still see her loved one's face. This song is an ode to enduring love and how even when separated, the memories and moments shared between two people can continue to bring them together.

My wife died three days ago. This was the song I used to communicate my feelings of loss and my hope for a future reunion in heaven. My wife was an extraordinarily beautiful woman, both inside and outside, and she deserved to hear the most beautiful voice and lyrics as she left this earth.

I am so sorry for your loss. I know this version touches many and hope it brought a little comfort during this heart wrenching time.

@@glennp5544 I have long considered Jo Stafford to be the finest female singer who ever lived, and I listen to her frequently. I always wanted the best for my gorgeous and saintly wife of the past 53 years, and Jo is simply the best. I first heard Jo sing some 70 years ago. She was the best then and she still is. I thank all those who have made listening to her now so easy.
